About this file
This is an Equipment Specification document for a Neutron Velocity Selector System to be manufactured for the General-Purpose Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (GP-SANS) instrument at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The document, designated NB5-EQ-30-0001-R00 and authored by Bill McHargue, was published in April 2026 and is managed by UT-Battelle, LLC under US Department of Energy contract DE-AC05-00OR22725. The specification was approved by multiple divisions including the Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Technologies Division, and HBRR Project Controls, with Revision 00 representing the initial release.
The equipment specification establishes detailed neutronic requirements for the velocity selector system, which must accommodate wavelengths between 3 Å and 20 Å without operating at any resonance speed. The velocity selector must achieve specific beam divergence performance of 0.64° at Full-Width Half-Maximum in both vertical and horizontal directions, with resolution tolerances of 9-10% at +5° tilt, 10% at 0° tilt, and 15-18% at -5° tilt. Peak transmission requirements include 80% at 0° tilt and 60% at ±5° tilt, with fully stopped rotor transmission of less than 5.0×10⁻⁴% at 2.3 Å wavelength. The neutron beam windows must be positioned at the three o'clock location on the housing endplates with a minimum 45 mm aperture both horizontally and vertically to accommodate a 40 mm square beam. The seller shall manufacture, inspect, assemble, balance, perform helium leak testing, package, and ship the velocity selector per statement of work XGH-SW-30-0001. Any required tilt stages or new lamellae molds for achieving these specifications must be listed as separate line items in the quotation.

2. INTRODUCTION
One velocity selector system shall be manufactured for use at the General-Purpose Small-Angle Neutron Scattering instrument (GP-SANS) at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA.
The GP-SANS instrument is uniquely suited to provide information into structure in a wide-range of materials across multiple scales of length and time.
3. SCOPE OF WORK
This equipment specification establishes the neutronic requirements for the neutron velocity selector system, hereafter referred to as “velocity selector”.
The velocity selector includes mechanical components that interact with the neutron beam, as well as the electrical control system required for operation. The Seller shall manufacture, inspect, assemble, balance, helium leak test, package, and ship the velocity selector in accordance with all requirements in the statement of work XGH-SW-30-0001.
4. NEUTRONIC REQUIREMENTS
The neutronics requirements of the velocity selector are as follows:
− Wavelength:
o 3 Å ≤ λ ≤ 20 Å without operating in any resonance speed of the velocity selector − Beam divergence (value at Full-Width Half-Maximum (FWHM)):
o Vertical 0.64° o Horizontal 0.64°
− Based on beam divergence, the resolution (value at FWHM):
o +5° Tilt 9% (but can accept 10%) o 0° Tilt 10% o -5° Tilt 15% (but can accept 18%)
− Peak transmission through velocity selector (including area loss and divergence loss):
o 0° Tilt 80% o ±5° Tilt 60%
− Transmission of a fully stopped velocity selector rotor at 2.3 Å wavelength neutrons:
o < 5.0x10⁻⁴ %
The neutron beam windows shall be located at the three o’clock position on the velocity selector housing endplates when looking from the reactor towards the detectors.
The neutron beam windows shall have a minimum aperture of 45 mm both horizontal and vertical to accommodate a 40 mm square neutron beam.
If a tilt stage is required to achieve the neutronic requirements listed for this velocity selector, the tilt stage shall be listed as a separate, unique line item in the quotation.
If new lamellae molds are required for fabrication of this velocity selector to achieve the neutronic requirements listed, the lamellae molds shall be listed as a separate, unique line item in the quotation.
