About this file

This is an Equipment Specification document for neutron velocity selector systems to be manufactured for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The specification requires the manufacture of two velocity selector systems: one for the Biological Small-Angle Neutron Scattering instrument (Bio-SANS) and one Standby system. The Seller must manufacture, inspect, assemble, balance, helium leak test, package, and ship the velocity selectors according to requirements in statement of work XGH-SW-30-0001. The velocity selectors must operate at wavelengths between 4 Å and 20 Å without operating in any resonance speed, with vertical and horizontal beam divergence of 0.46° at Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM). Resolution (Δλ/λ) requirements vary by tilt angle: +5° tilt at 7% (accepting up to 10%), 0° tilt at 10% (accepting up to 11%), and -5° tilt at 20% (accepting up to 15%). Peak transmission specifications are 80% at 0° tilt and 70% at ±5° tilt. The transmission of a fully stopped rotor at 2.3 Å wavelength must be less than 5.0×10⁻⁴%. Neutron beam windows must be positioned at the three o'clock position on the housing endplates with a minimum aperture of 45 mm both horizontal and vertical to accommodate a 40 mm square neutron beam. If tilt stages or new lamellae molds are required to meet neutronic requirements, they must be listed as separate line items in the quotation. The document was prepared by ORNL and managed by UT-Battelle, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy under contract DE-AC05-00OR22725, with approval signatures dated April-May 2026.

2. INTRODUCTION

Two velocity selector systems shall be manufactured for use at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA.

The first one for the Biological Small-Angle Neutron Scattering instrument (Bio-SANS) and a second, Standby velocity selector system.

The Bio-SANS instrument provides unique insights into the structure of biological systems across multiple scales of length. This includes the nano- to mesoscale structure and dynamics of functional complexes and hierarchical assemblies within a cell. The scientific challenges span from fundamental mechanistic studies of biomolecular function to complex hierarchical materials and in-cellulo systems.

3. SCOPE OF WORK

This equipment specification establishes the neutronic requirements for the Bio-SANS and the Standby neutron velocity selector systems, hereafter referred to as “velocity selectors”.

The velocity selectors include mechanical components that interact with the neutron beam, as well as the electrical control system required for operation. The Seller shall manufacture, inspect, assemble, balance, helium leak test, package, and ship the velocity selectors in accordance with all requirements in the statement of work XGH-SW-30-0001.

4. NEUTRONIC REQUIREMENTS

The neutronics requirements of the velocity selectors are as follows:

− Wavelength:

o 4 Å ≤ λ ≤ 20 Å without operating in any resonance speed of the velocity selector − Beam divergence (value at FWHM):

o Vertical 0.46° o Horizontal 0.46°

− Based on beam divergence, the Δλ/λ or resolution (value at FWHM):

o +5° Tilt 7% (but can accept 10%) o 0° Tilt 10% (but can accept 11%) o -5° Tilt 20% (but can accept 15%)

− Peak transmission through velocity selector (including area loss and divergence loss):

o 0° Tilt 80% o ±5° Tilt 70%

− Transmission of a fully stopped velocity selector rotor at 2.3 Å wavelength neutrons:

o < 5.0x10⁻⁴ %

The neutron beam windows shall be located at the three o’clock position on the velocity selector housing endplates when looking from the reactor towards the detectors.

The neutron beam windows shall have a minimum aperture of 45 mm both horizontal and vertical to accommodate a 40 mm square neutron beam.

If tilt stages are required to achieve the neutronic requirements listed for these velocity selectors, the tilt stages shall be listed as separate, unique line items in the quotation.

If new lamellae molds are required for fabrication of these velocity selectors to achieve the neutronic requirements listed, the lamellae molds shall be listed as separate, unique line items in the quotation.
