About this file

This document is a product description attachment for federal contract N6660426Q0410 specifying requirements for a hydraulic actuator intended for subsea operations.

The government seeks a hydraulic actuator designed for an undersea "dump truck" system that pivots a load from horizontal to a 20-degree angle. The actuator must remain fully operational after 12 months of submersion in seawater in a non-operating (retracted/static) condition and must be capable of holding an extended load position for up to 6 months without active hydraulic pressure. The system will operate at 2000 PSI with a hydraulic flow rate of 1-2 GPM. Key performance specifications include: operability to 200 meters depth; capability to actuate loads up to 16,000 lbs; automatic load arrest upon hydraulic pressure loss; minimum stroke length of 65 inches; pin-to-pin retracted length of 97.25 inches; compatibility with petroleum-based hydraulic fluids; and ability to gently lower loads. The actuator must feature a lug end fitting on the piston base and a spherical rod end fitting sized for approximately 1.00-inch pins for platform mounts, with a piston bracket robust enough to bolt to the dump truck structure. The initial actuator angle shall not exceed 45 degrees from vertical, with closer-to-vertical positioning preferred to minimize loads on other system components. The government acknowledges that final performance characteristics may vary based on system geometry and will consider solutions that closely meet the specified desired values.

N6660426Q0410 Attachment 1: Description of Product

Requested

The government is seeking a hydraulic actuator for use in an undersea “Dump

Truck” type system. The provided actuator will be used to pivot a load from horizontal to a 20 degree angle (see figures below). It is anticipated that the actuator may remain submerged in seawater in a non-operating condition (e.g. retracted/static) for up to 12-months without service. It is required that the actuator still be fully operational at the end of this 12-month period. It is also required that the actuator can be “locked” in an extended position, while holding the load, for up to 6 months without hydraulic pressure being actively supplied. Additionally, the actuator must be able to gently lower the load from the 20 degree angle back to horizontal. The piston should be supplied with a bracket than can be bolted to the dump truck and is robust enough to handle the required loads.

Below is a list of generalized requirements that, if met by the supplied product, shall provide an acceptable solution for integration into the system. The government understands that performance characteristics such as maximum load, retracted length, extended length, maximum stroke, may be dependent on system geometry and thus the government will consider solutions that are close to meeting the desired values. The angle of the actuator in its initial position shall not be more than 45 degrees from vertical. The closer to vertical the actuator is in its initial position, the lower the loads that will be subjected to other system components. Hydraulic oil will be supplied at

2000PSI, with a flow rate of 1-2 GPM to the actuator.

Requirements:

• Product shall be operable in a subsea environment, up to 200 meters

• Product shall be fully operable after 1 year of submersion in seawater in a non-operating condition

• Product shall be capable of actuating loads up to 16,000lbs when operated at

2000PSI

• Product shall be capable of holding the load at an extended position without hydraulic pressure supplied

• Product shall have a stroke length of at least 65 inches

• The product shall automatically arrest the load in the event of hydraulic pressure loss

• Product shall be compatible with petroleum-based hydraulic fluids.

• Product shall have a pin-to-pin length of 97.25” when in a retracted state

• Product shall have a lug end fitting on the piston base, and a spherical rod end fitting, sized for ~1.00” pins to platform mounts.
