1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The requirement may be from one version of LTO to the same (i.e. LTO-6 to LTO-6) or to copy one version of LTO tape to another version (i.e. LTO- 4 to LTO-5). This need arises from by a standalone duplication device.
The devices are not network connected, have no computer, software, or general purpose software, and do not require any Information Assurance maintenance. They are very simple to operate and do not require any specialized training. They can copy any classification of data tape because they have no volatile memory or network connection.
2.0 PURPOSE
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) provides instructions for the Naval Undersea
Warfare Center Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) Code 15 government and contractor personnel on the proper use of LTO tape duplication devices.

When the data is being copied exactly from one tape to another, it can be handled
The Tape Duplicator consists of mountable unit with two tape drives, a master and a copy. A display screen allows for basic messages to be displayed to the user for status and instructions.
There may be a one way USB port for delivering firmware upgrades. The duplication device is powered with a standard AC power cord.
Tape Duplicators are capable of duplicating LTO versions with the following compatible formats:
LTO-X Duplication System
- LTO-X Read/Write (duplicate this format)
- LTO-X-1 Read/Write (duplicate this format)
- LTO-X-2 Read Only (migrate from this format to LTO-X-1 or LTO-X)
See Appendix A for the Tape Duplication assets in Code 15 inventory.
5.1 TAPE DUPLICATION USE REQUIREMENTS / OPERATIONS
Personnel using a Tape Duplicator for projects associated with Code 15 must comply with the policies in the list below:
1. Follow the procedures for the NUWCDIVNPT Base Inventory Tracking System (BITS) to copy a classified LTO tape. The user must have an AIMTC account to access and use the BITS system to check out classified media.
2. Before generating a new Classified LTO Tape with the Tape Duplicator, a new ID number will be generated from the Base Inventory and Tracking System (BITS) in the Code 15 Media Center, and the tape will be properly marked IAW References A and B.
3. The blank tape will then be inserted into the Tape Duplicator and copied per Reference A.
4. If a tape is not successfully copied, the unsuccessful copy will be returned to the Code 15 Media center and the user will process a request to formally destroy the media IAW Reference C.
5. Return the original LTO tape to the original secure storage location per Reference A when the procedure is completed.
6. The new tape will also be handled and stored IAW Reference A.
6.1 CUSTODIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The Tape Duplication Device is standalone and has no operating system. It does not have any volatile memory and is not connected to any network or enclave. It is an UNCLASSIFIED piece of equipment.
2. The Tape Duplication Devices may copy UNCLASSIFIED, CONFIDENTIAL, and SECRET LTO tapes.
3. The Tape Duplication Device is UNCLASSIFIED when unloaded and powered off.
When operating, it has the same classification as the currently mounted media.
4. The Tape Duplication Devices are stored and used in Building 1320, Lab 282.
To update Firmware: USB Port: Used solely for Firmware Upgrade.
1. When firmware needs to be upgraded, an Information Assurance technician (IAT) appointed per Reference D must download the required firmware directly from the vendor’s designated repository to the unclassified network.
2. The IAT must then burn the firmware to an unencrypted CD.
3. The IAT must use an approved external USB CD ROM Drive to transfer the firmware to the Tape Duplication Device for the firmware upgrade.
4. The IAT must then disconnect the drive from the USB Port on the Tape Duplication
Device.
5. The USB Port does not allow output data transfer from the Tape Duplication Device through the USB port and its sole purpose is for firmware upgrade. It is not possible for data from the LTO tapes in the Tape Duplication Device to be transferred through the USB port.
