SAMPLE OF TRANSDUCERS CONNECTIONS TO CIRCUIT BOARD:

TRANSDUCER OF TANK 3

TRANSDUCER OF TANK 2

TRANSDUCER OF TANK 1

NO CONNECTION

PRE-INSTALLATION TEST – Sonix-1000.

The purpose of this optional test is to verify that the controller has not been damaged during shipment and to get familiar with its function prior to installation. Please, perform the following steps:

*** Attach transducer coaxial cable to terminals labeled T1 at the circuit board bottom - coax center lead (solid wire) to terminal number 2 and coax shield (copper braid) to the next terminal to the right (this will be number 3).

*** Making sure that the POWER switch is in OFF position, connect a temporary power cord to terminals marked H (for Hot) and N (Neutral). For the test purpose the ground wire is not required and it is not required to know the AC power cord polarity (Hot vs. Neutral). Plug the power cord into any __________ VAC receptacle.

*** Turn the POWER switch ON and close the controller door. The controller will start operating. Point the transducer perpendicular toward a nearby flat target (wall, box, etc.), at least 2 ft. away from the transducer. Observe that the display of this channel will show some level, for instance:

TANK 1= 12.79 FEET, or so, followed by:

TANK 2= NO ECHO HERE! - since you do not have the second tank transducer connected. Followed by:

TANK 3= NO ECHO HERE! – you also do not have the third tank transducer connected, and so on. This cycle will repeat continuously.

You may want to gradually move the transducer away or closer to the target to see the level display change. Make sure that the transducer is perpendicular to the target, otherwise the display will soon be replaced by: NO ECHO HERE!

You may also check the preprogrammed 'Distance' key (see the Startup and Keyboard Control chapters). Make sure that your target is not farther from the transducer than the ‘Distance’.

This completes the test. Please, if you have any question, call us at 941-964-1361, we will be happy to assist you.

You may want to get more acquainted with the controller at this time. If so, see the Keyboard Control chapter, try the Distance key, Set points key, try the Measure Distance program (par.

c2), etc.

Good luck!

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – Sonix-1OOO:

PLEASE, NOTE: Most of operating problems are caused by improper installation or rough handling during installation.

1) Handle the controller and the transducers with care, do not drop, avoid impact. Mount the enclosure with the door closed. The power switch on the board should be off during installation. Do not press excessively on the circuit board. In case of the stainless steel transducers, DO NOT DENT THE TRANSDUCER HOUSING!

2) Mount the transducers at the proper height above the monitored level, recognizing the transducer's inches blind zone, or dead band. For liquids monitoring, the transducer has to point vertically down so the signal reflected from the liquid surface returns back to the transducer. Please, read also Startup chapter to avoid possible problems that might appear during startup or operation.

Do not position the transducer in front of the inlet pipe or too close to the tank wall. As a rule of thumb, the minimum distance from the wall should be 10 % of the tank height, assuming the wall is relatively smooth. For tanks 2O ft. or higher, two to three feet distance may be adequate.

3) To hold the transducer in place, you may use any plastic or flexible fittings, such as PVC connectors, PVC flanges, "Cord Grip", Cable Strain Relief or any metallic couplings and fittings.

Exception: In case of Class I approved transducers, your code probably does not permit plastic fittings. Use the code required fittings and mounting procedures. Make sure the connection is tight.

All transducers have 3/4-inch NPT male thread for mounting, except for transducer no. 2310 which has 1-inch NPT.

4) If an extension of the coax cable is needed, use only RG62A, RG62/U or similar, low capacitance coax cable (13.5 pF/foot). When making the coax connection, NEVER use twisted wire connections. For the best connection, solder the center leads and insulate, solder the shields and insulate. Make sure that the center lead and shield are insulated from each other and the entire connection is insulated from the conduit.

As the next best connection, use a grounded metallic junction box with a dual screw terminal block inside. Tighten the screws to hold the cable center lead and shield. If you use lugs there, crimp and solder these to the wires. Do not ground the coax shield to the junction box. You may cut off the unneeded, excess length of the coax cable.

WARNING: BNC or similar coax connectors will corrode and therefore are not suitable in an industrial environment. Also, moisture condensation inside the connector will short the signal.

A few years later, who will remember that there is a coax connector somewhere in the conduit? Crimped lugs and connectors should be soldered, or will corrode in time.

5) Avoid sharp bends or creases of the coax cable, the center lead or the coax plastic jacket insulation may break.

6) The transducer cables should be placed in a conduit. All transducer cables of your controller may be placed in a common conduit. Due to the scanning, only one cable is actually connected to the controller at any given time, others are disconnected. However, to avoid 'cross-talk' between two controllers, do not place transducer cables of another controller in the same conduit.

7) Prior to connecting and disconnecting the transducer coax cable, always turn power off! Do not push excessively on the circuit board.

8) Install 12O VAC, single phase, 3-wire power in a separate conduit from the transducer wires. Connect Hot wire to terminal labeled ‘H’ (number 22). Connect Neutral wire to terminal labeled ‘N’ (number 21). The ground wire is needed for safety; connect it to terminal labeled ‘G’. The power should not be from a circuit connected to large electric motors or source of electrical noise, power surges or dips.

9) Do not connect any conduit to the top of the enclosure! The moisture that collects in the conduits would drip onto the circuit board and corrode the tracks and components. Make sure that the conduits are not waterlogged.

10) Recheck all wiring. Call us with any question at 941-964-1361.

To proceed further, refer to STARTUP chapter.

OPERATION.

Your controller can monitor simultaneously from one to seven tanks, as selected from the keypad (see Startup and Troubleshooting).

The controller transmits to one transducer at the time and for a specified time interval receives the echo. Each transmit signal is announced by the red LED light.

The transducers are connected to the terminals at the bottom of the circuit board and labeled T1 for the first tank, T2 for the second tank, T3 third tank and so on up to T7 for tank 7. The transducer cable center leads are attached to terminals 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. The transducer cable shield should be attached to the next right terminal to the center lead. For instance, transducer cable of tank 1 will have the center lead connected to terminal number 2 and the cable shield to the next terminal to the right, which will be number 3. The transducer cable shields have to be connected!

The small Reed relays located above these terminals are used to route the signal to transducers. Only one relay is closed at the time, as indicated by the red LED lights.

Each echo is compensated for ambient temperature. When an echo is received, the controller will convert it to a distance to the monitored surface, measured from the transducer radiating face. A subtraction of the above from the Distance (transducer face to the tank bottom), stored in memory, yields the level (or depth), measured from the tank bottom up. These results will be shown in display.

When valid echoes are being received from a particular tank, the tank display will be shown for about 2 seconds. The display is asynchronous with transmissions. For instance, the display may show level in Tank 5, but during that time all tanks are monitored. When no valid echo is being received from a particular tank, it is announced by an audible beep and the 'NO ECHO HERE' display for about one second.

All data entered from the keyboard is stored in a nonvolatile RAM memory with an internal battery backup. The internal battery will retain data for some 10 to 20 years. Thus, no data will be lost during a power outage.

The optional tank output cards are inserted at the top of the circuit board and are labeled TANK 1 through TANK 7. The labels correspond to the transducer T1 through T7 terminals, i.e.

tank output card 1 provides outputs for tank 1. The output terminals are located directly above each output card, labeled SP1, SP2 (set points) and 4-20 mA (current). The set points as well as the current outputs (proportional to level) are updated during each signal transmission.

Each output card can have a 4-20 mA current output that has its own internal power source.

Do not connect any external power supply to this current loop! The current is sourcing and flows from + terminal. Current return is to – terminal. The current wires should not be grounded. To program the current span, see Keyboard Control chapter.

Each output card can also have up to three set points with SPST reed relays. These normally open contacts will close when the set point level is reached or exceeded. On decreasing level, the contacts will open below the set point. The state of the set point contacts is indicated by its corresponding yellow LED light, located on the output card. The light is ON when the contacts are closed (level reached or exceeded the set point). To program set points, see Keyboard Control chapter.

The potentiometer marked P2 that is used for a fine adjustment of the temperature compensation which affects the accuracy of measurement. It is factory preset and there should be no need to change the setting. Please, consult the factory when making adjustments of this potentiometer. Potentiometer P3 adjusts contrast of the digital display.

Potentiometers P4 and PJ should not be adjusted.

Your controller is a complex instrument that requires a careful, common sense handling. Avoid impact, do not drop the enclosure or transducers, do not press excessively on the circuit boards. When connecting or disconnecting wires or working inside the enclosure, turn first the power off.

The 12O VAC power connection should not come from a circuit with heavy motors and machinery connected to it, avoid power surges and dips. Due to the solid-state nature of this controller, no maintenance is suggested.

STARTUP AND TROUBLESHOOTING

If the pre-installation test has been successfully completed, the controller properly installed and the external wires correctly terminated and checked, the actual startup should be quite straightforward. Even though each controller has been preprogrammed in some way, most likely it will not fit exactly your application. You should always check at least the preprogrammed 'Distance'.

As the first step, after turning the power on, check or program the Distances (transducer to tank bottom) for each connected tank. This parameter in MANDATORY. Refer to the Keyboard Control chapter herein. Any inaccuracy in ‘Distance’ will result in equal error in level display.

In some cases, as in large tanks, it is not so easy to determine the vertical distance between the transducer radiating face and the tank bottom by a manual measurement. The Measure Distance function (see Keyboard Control, page 5, paragraph c2) can be used in lieu of that. If the tank is empty, this function will measure and display the required 'Distance' to the bottom, assuming the bottom is flat, horizontal. Write it down and enter into the memory. If the tank is not empty but the level (depth) is known, add the level to the distance measured by the Measure Distance function. The sum will be the vertical distance between the transducer face and the tank bottom.

If you plan to have the display in gallons, it may be a good idea to start with feet or inches display, a potential problem can be identified much easier this way.

Press OPERATE key to start operation. Relax and observe the display. It is suggested to start observing only one tank at the time. Therefore, you may want to start with tank 1 and ignore the rest of tanks for now. Do the numbers look correct? If not, the cause could be:

1) The stored Distance is incorrect. Always check the stored parameters first.

2) Check the wires! Transducer cables may be switched, you may see level in another tank. Is the transducer coax shield connected? Is the temperature compensation wire connected?

Please, check and correct.

Display indicates very high level while the actual level is much lower:

3) There could be an obstruction in the tank above the liquid surface, causing an unwanted echo.

[To check- look inside the tank, test the transducer outside of the tank.]

4) If the transducer is mounted in a long and narrow nozzle (standpipe), the nozzle or the sharp inside protruding edge of the nozzle may cause a false echo.

[To check- as above.]

5) Transducer may be exposed to very high or low temperatures.

[To check- note the temperature and test the transducer after cooling off or warming up outside of the tank.]

6) Transducer may be held in place by a metallic fitting or attached directly to a metal flange.

[To check- test with nonmetallic fittings.]

Display indicates no echo:

7) Transducer may not be perpendicular to the monitored surface or the tank is empty and the bottom is sloped.

[To check- tilt the transducer slightly in several directions and observe the effect.]

8) Any transducer cable connector used? Is transducer cable properly connected? None of these are recommended!

[See Installation Instructions.]

9) No reflective surface under the transducer - foam or strong vortex of the surface, exposed sloped or dished tank bottom.

[To check- look inside the tank.]

10) The monitored surface is within the transducer blind zone.

[To check- as above.]

11) Transducer range may be exceeded - check the Transducer Bulletin.

[To check- look how far down is the monitored surface.]

Level indication is erratic:

12) Reversed or loose transducer or power supply wires.

[To check- see the wiring diagram and verify that coax center lead and coax shield wires are correctly attached to terminals. Remove transducer cables from terminals and re-attach again. Transducer cables should be in metallic conduit! Shake the wiring and the enclosure and observe.]

13) Cross-talk between two or more controllers when their transducer cables are placed in a common conduit.

[To check- turn the other units off and observe the effect.]

14) Transducer may not be perpendicular to the monitored surface.

[To check- as in Item 7.]

15) AC power dips or surges caused by large electric motors nearby.

[To check- turn motors off and observe the effect.]

It is very unlikely that a transducer was damaged. If you suspect a damaged transducer, please verify the function by removing the transducer out of the tank and pointing it perpendicular toward a near, flat target.

If none of the above resolves the problem, please call us.

Your controller may have been preset to monitor less than seven tanks. You can change this anytime when the controller is operating. Do not stop the controller by pressing the Tank key!

For instance, to change from five tanks to seven tanks monitoring, depress number 7 on the keypad and hold down continuously until the display starts to show Tank 1 through Tank 7.

This takes about ten to fifteen seconds. Likewise, as an example, suppose you want to change from monitoring of seven tanks to two tanks. Depress number 2 on the keypad and hold down continuously until the display starts to show Tank 1 and Tank 2. This also takes about ten to fifteen seconds.

The set points and the current output (if your controller has any) can be programmed now or at any time later. The current output 'Span', the level corresponding to 20 mA, has to be entered from the keypad (see Keyboard Control chapter).

Application Guide for Ultrasonic Level Controls:

When the operation appears ‘intermittent’, ‘sporadic’ or ‘erratic’, do not assume that the product has failed. These symptoms typically indicate an installation problem, you will need to troubleshoot.

Entire length of transducer cable has to be installed in a metallic conduit. The conduit has to be grounded, otherwise it will serve no purpose. Do not place any other wires in the transducer cable conduit.

To avoid cross-talk, do not place transducer cables of two or more controllers in a common conduit. Do not place two ultrasonic controllers next to each other, separate them at least by one foot. Preferably, do not daisy-chain the 120 VAC power to two or more ultrasonic controllers.

When extending transducer cables, do not use any coaxial cable connectors or crimp connectors. Splice cables on a screw terminal block placed in a metallic junction box.

120 VAC power should be ‘clean’, i.e. it should not come from circuit or transformer loaded with heavy power equipment or switching. Avoid power dips, surges, welding, or similar. The 120 VAC power supply wires should not run near sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI). If this is suspect, turn off all electrical equipment and observe the effect on ultrasonic level controller.

Do not daisy-chain 120 VAC power wires with other electrical equipment. Preferably, run the wires directly to the 120 VAC transformer or power distribution point.

Make sure that transducer wires and power wires are correctly and firmly connected to terminal block of ultrasonic level controller. When in doubt, remove the wires and re-terminate. Watch for reversed coax cable connection or wires that slip from terminals.

Install transducer exactly vertical so it can receive reflection from liquid surface.

Avoid possible signal reflections from channel walls, brackets, grating, beams, baffles, etc. Do not place transducer in sprayed area. Spray could absorb the signal.

Foam, scum, debris, rugs or similar matter floating on surface could absorb echo and prevent signal to reflect back to transducer.

KEYBOARD CONTROL – Son/UC Version.

Legend:

F = special function

O.K. = used to enter a parameter

TA NK = tank number

OPE RAT = operate

SET PNT = set point

DIS TAN = distance

When starting up your controller, you will have to enter parameters, such as Distance (this one is

MANDATORY!), Set Points (if you have any), span of the current output (if you have it) and select the display units (feet, inches, gallons, meters or liters) for each tank.

First of all, relax, be assured that you can do no harm by punching a wrong key; there is nothing that could not be corrected anytime.

The controller has an internal 'watch dog' timer that will restart the operation when the display has been inactive for about 15 seconds. Do not be disturbed by this, just resume whatever you intended to do.

To get access to the keyboard, press TANK key. The controller will stop the operation and display this instruction :

PRESS TANK NO. KEY:

Before proceeding further, note the clear beeper tone heard when you pressed TANK key. This tone means that a correct key was pressed; the tone will assist you during the keyboard use. The tone will sound each time a correct key or a number was pressed. To hear the other (error) tone, announcing that a wrong key was selected, press now the DISTANCE or SET POINT or O.K. or F key. On error tone, the display will not change and will wait until a correct key is pressed.

Another important thing to know is that no matter how confused you may get during the programming, you can always press the OPERATE key and start over. The same can be accomplished by turning the power switch off and on again. To practice a little, press OPERATE now to see the controller resuming a regular operation.

Once again, press TANK key, the controller will stop the operation and the display will show:

PRESS TANK NO. KEY:

meaning that it is waiting for a tank number 1 through 9. Press the tank number, for example #1 and the display will show:

TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

The controller is asking: 'for tank #1, what do you want to see? Do you want the Distance or Set Points or other Functions?'.

You could now press either the DISTANCE, SET POINT or FUNCTIONS key. (Or, if you did not want to see anything for this tank, you can press TANK, then another tank number. Or, as mentioned earlier, you could press OPERATE key if you wanted to resume the operation).

A) DISTANCE

- from the transducer face to the tank bottom or the lowest level you wish to monitor (vertical), always in hundreds of a foot or meter, depending on the selected display units (will be explained in paragraph c1-Display Units). Press DISTANCE key and the display will show the previously entered distance, if any. For instance, the display may show:

T1: DIST=14.50 FT.OK? (T1 means Tank 1) or T1: DIST=04.41 M.OK? (when display is in meters)

*If this distance is not OK, enter the correct distance. If you enter a wrong number, continue keying in the numbers until the display shows the correct distance.

To enter the number into the memory, you MUST press the O.K. key.

*If this is the correct distance, press OK key to proceed.

After the OK key, the display returns to:

You may want to recheck the newly entered Distance by pressing the DISTANCE key again. Make a correction, if required, then press OK key to proceed further.

B) SET POINTS

- represent a level from tank bottom up at which a particular set point will be activated, always in hundreds of a foot or meter. Your controller may have up to three set points per tank, each of them can be independently programmed across the entire range. If you have any set point here, press the SET

POINT key. The display will show:

T1: SET POINT 1,2,3?

The controller is asking: 'which set point of Tank 1 do you want to see, 1, 2 or 3?'.

Press number 1 for Set Point 1. The display may show for instance:

T1: SP1= 12.75 FT.OK?

or T1: SP1= 03.88 M.OK?

*If you want to activate this set point when the level reaches or exceeds 12.75 ft, press OK key to proceed further.

*If you want to change this set point, enter the numbers, then press OK.

After the OK key, the display returns to:

You may want to re-check the newly entered number by pressing again the SET POINT key, then press

#1. Correct the displayed number if required, and then press the OK key.

Repeat the above sequence for Set Points 2 and 3, if your controller has these.

C) FUNCTIONS

- allow to select, set or perform the following :

* Display units (feet, inches, gallons, meters or liters)

* Measure a distance

* Program the current output span

* Echo mapping

* Optional functions you may have requested

A SIMPLE RULE APPLIES HERE - you can get through (to see) all the functions, without changing anything, by simply pressing OK key to any message in display until you get back to: TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

To practice a little, starting from the above display, press F key and keep pressing OK until the display returns back to the above.

c1) DISPLAY UNITS.

To view the functions one by one, start from the display:

TANK1: DIST?,SP?,F? by pressing the F key. The first function is display units. The first message to appear could be either:

T1: SHOWS FEET.OK? or T1: SHOWS INCHES.OK? or T1:SHOWS GALLONS.OK?

or T1: SHOWS METERS.OK? or T1: SHOWS LITERS.OK?

It means that the display for Tank 1 will be in feet, inches, U.S. gallons, meters or liters. This message will be followed by automatically alternating messages in about 2 sec. intervals:

PUSH OK TO KEEP IT, and PUSH 0 TO CHANGE.

Observe the alternating display for a moment. You are expected to do one of two things, either to press

OK key to keep the display as is, or to press 0 key (zero) to change the display units.

* To keep the units, pressing the OK key will get you to the next function.

* To change the units, press 0 key. The display will automatically show alternating messages of the other units and you would press OK key when you see the units you want. For instance, if the display of this tank was in feet, the messages would be :

T1: TO INCHES? OK? , followed by T1:TO US GALLONS?OK?

and T1: TO METERS? OK? and T1: TO LITERS? OK?

These messages, accompanied by an audio sound (chirp), will alternate in about 2 second intervals until you make the selection by pressing the OK. (If you do not want to make any selection here, you will have to press OPERATE key to get out of this loop).

The gallons display is applicable to vertical and horizontal tanks of a circular diameter. To use this display in dish or conical bottom tanks or square or rectangular tanks, contact Automated Sonix Corp.

When selecting the gallons, the next question to appear in display:

T1: DIA= 00.00 FT.OK? or, for instance T1: DIA=18.50 FT.OK?

In the first example, you MUST enter the tank diameter in hundreds of a foot, then press OK. In the second example, if the diameter is correct, press OK key to proceed to the next function. Likewise, when selecting liters, the display may show for instance:

T1: DIA= 00.00 M.OK? or T1: DIA=5.63 M.OK?

The display will now continuously alternate:

IS TANK 1 VERTICAL? (wait to decide, no need to hurry)

PUSH OK IF VERTICAL,

PUSH 0 IF HORIZONTAL

If your tank is vertical, press OK and the display will proceed to the next function. If the tank is horizontal, press 0. The display will show:

T1:LENG.=00.00 FT.OK? (shows previously entered length, if any) or T1:LENG.=00.00 M.OK?

The controller is asking for the tank length in feet or meters. Enter the length if different from what is displayed and press OK. If you left 00.00 or entered 00.00 for the length, this tank would be assumed to be vertical and the controller would calculate the volume for a vertical tank. The horizontal tank volume is calculated for flat tank ends. If your tank has rounded ends, you need to approximate the equivalent length. Once the tank length has been entered, this tank volume will be displayed in gallons or liters with

H (denoting Horizontal) behind, for instance:

VOLUME = 6210 GAL.H or TANK 1= 6210 GAL.H or TANK 2= 23500 LIT.H

The display of volume in vertical tanks would simply say:

VOLUME = 6210 GAL. or TANK 1= 6210 GAL. or TANK 2= 23500 LIT.

When you operate the display in feet, inches or gallons and later want to change to metric units (meters, liters), you do not have to reenter the parameters in metric units. The controller will recalculate these as it needs, you are not burdened with conversions. The same applies when switching from metric units to feet, inches and gallons.

OTHER FUNCTIONS :

All other functions are considered non-essential, meaning that you do not have to make any selection, if you do not want to. You may not need to measure distances, may not have the current output, most likely will not need to echo map. Accordingly, after finally pressing OK to the display unit selection in the previous parameter, the other options will be automatically presented in display in sequence for about 5 seconds each. You do not have to press any key, if you do not want to. After the timeout, the display returns to

T1: DIST?,SP?,F?

As an alternative to get quickly through the following functions without changing anything, you may press any number from 0 to 9.

c2) MEASURE DISTANCE - between the transducer to the nearest target.

This is the next function after the display units selection. The display will show :

CHECK THIS TANK? OK?

The controller is asking: 'do you want to transmit into this tank and see the distance between the transducer and the first target it sees?’. The first target would typically be the liquid level or, if the tank is empty, it would be the tank bottom. While the controller performs this function, it will not change set points, current outputs and will not transmit via RS232C. If you pressed OK key, the display will show for instance:

T1:14.27 FT TO TARGET or T1: 04.35 M TO TARGET (when in meters) meaning the distance from transducer to the first target is 14.27 feet or 4.35 meters. To deactivate, press either OK or any other number key to proceed to the next function.

c3) SPAN CURRENT OUTPUT - the display now shows:

SPAN CURRENT OUT?OK?

The controller is asking: 'do you want to enter a level at which the current output should equal to 20 mA?'. If you press OK, the display will show for instance:

T1:20MA= 11.85 FT.OK?

or T1:20MA= 03.61 M.OK?

In this example, the current output will be 20 mA when at the level of 11.85 feet or 3.61 meter. You may now change or keep the present level, then press the OK key to proceed to the next function.

(Note : The current output will automatically be 4 mA at the level of 0.00 feet or meters.)

c4) ECHO MAPPING - may be used to eliminate echoes from obstructions within the tank that interfere with the level measurement. The obstructions may be pipes protruding into the tank, cross bars, beams, mixers, etc. The proper use of echo mapping requires much of experience. Please, call us first if you feel that this feature would be beneficial to your application, we will discuss this with you and forward a detail instructions. For this reason, this manual omits the instructions on activating the echo mapping.

The display, following the previous function should show:

T1:ECHO MAPP. IS OFF

In case that the echo mapping has been activated by an operator mistake, the display would show :

T1:ECHO MAPP. IS ON

Deactivating (turning off) is possible during this display by pressing number 1 and then pressing number

0 anytime within the next two seconds (after releasing #1 key). The display will indicate that the echo mapping is now off.

D) ESCAPE FROM A FOULED UP KEYBOARD COMMAND.

Should you feel that the keyboard is not responding to your commands, do either of the following :

* press the OPERATE key, or

* turn the power switch (12O VAC or 220 VAC) off and back on.

The controller will start the regular operation and you may now repeat the original task.

E) LIMITING THE NUMBER OF SCANNED TANKS.

If your application requires monitoring of less than seven tanks, the scanning may be easily changed from the keyboard so the controller scans only the tanks you want and ignores the rest. For instance, an application with five tanks does not require monitoring of tanks #6 through #7. Assuming you now want to monitor only the first five tanks, depress number 5 during regular operation and hold the key down continuously for about six seconds until the red LED indicating lights on the board start running from 1 to 5, then back to 1 and so on. If you later wanted to monitor for instance seven tanks, press and hold down number 7 key. If you wanted to monitor only one tank for some reason, depress number 1 during regular operation and hold the key down until the controller stops the scan and the display shows:

LEVEL = 89.6 INCHES, or

VOLUME= 621 GALS.,

or so, if display in gallons is selected. Please note this type of level display message when monitoring one tank only.

F) EXAMPLES OF A TYPICAL KEYBOARD USE.

The controller is operating and let us say you want to see the stored Distance for Tank 2 :

Press: Display Shows: Comment:

TANK PRESS TANK NO. KEY: (#1 through #9)

2 TANK 2: DIST?,SP?,F?

DISTANCE T2: DIST=10.00 FT.OK? (1O ft. dist.)

You may now change this Distance or keep it at 10 ft., then press

OK TANK 2: DIST?,SP?,F?

Now you could press OPERATE key to resume the scanning. Let us assume you want to see the Set Points 1 and 2 of this tank :

SET POINT T2: SET POINT 1,2,3?

1 T2: SP1= 05.30 FT.OK? (set at 5.3')

OK TANK 2: DIST?,SP?,F? (keep it as is)

SET POINT T2: SET POINT 1,2,3?

2 T2: SP2= 07.90 FT.OK? (keep as is)

OK TANK 2: DIST?,SP?,F?

Now, let's see Tank 1 Distance :

TANK PRESS TANK NO. KEY:

1 TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

DISTANCE T1: DIST=12.00 FT.OK?

If you wanted to change this Distance to say 7.6 ft:

7 T1: DIST=00.07 FT.OK? (pressed #7)

6 T1: DIST=00.76 FT.OK? (pressed #6)

0 T1: DIST=07.60 FT.OK? (pressed #0)

OK TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

Recheck to make sure the number is correct:

Press: Display Shows: Comment:

DISTANCE T1: DIST=07.60 FT.OK?

OK TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

Let's say the display of Tank 1 is in inches and you want to change it to gallons display :

F T1: SHOWS INCHES.OK?

0 T1: TO FEET? OK? (wait here) wait for gallons displ. T1:TO US GALLONS?OK? (now OK)

OK T1: DIA= 00.00 FT.OK? (not OK,no dia) have to enter the tank diameter, say 9.5 ft:

9 T1: DIA= 00.09 FT.OK? (not yet)

5 T1: DIA= 00.95 FT.OK? (now it's OK)

0 T1: DIA= 09.50 FT.OK?

OK

The message will now alternate :

IS TANK 1 VERTICAL? (wait here)

PUSH OK IF VERTICAL,

PUSH 0 IF HORIZONTAL

Assume the tank is vertical so you press :

OK CHECK THIS TANK? OK?

you can now either wait and let the display to timeout, or press OK or any number to get to: TANK 1:DIST?,SP?,F?

maybe you want to recheck it :

F T1:SHOWS GALLONS.OK?

OK T1: DIA= 09.50 FT.OK?

etc

Let us now try to change Tank 1 from operation in feet to meters. Assume you have previously set the

Distance to 15.00 feet. The display was showing the level in feet. Now, you wish to have the level display in meters, so press:

TANK PRESS TANK NO. KEY:

2 TANK 1: DIST?,SP?,F?

F T1: SHOWS FEET. OK?

0 and wait T1: TO INCHES? OK? wait for next units

T1:TO US GALLONS?OK? wait for next

T1: TO METERS? OK? now press OK key

From this moment, all parameters that you have entered previously in feet will be internally recalculated to meters for this tank. You may now either press OK key and see the distance to target in meters, see the current span in meters, etc. You do not have to reenter any parameter in meters, as long as you have it previously entered in feet. This in convenient because you do not need to remember any conversions from one units to another.

For instance, assume the controller operates in gallons and that you have previously entered 11.00 feet

Distance and 10.00 feet tank Diameter. Assume the tank is horizontal and you have previously entered

20.00 feet tank Length. Now, you want to have the display in liters. You do not need to reenter any of these parameters again. All you need to do is to change units from gallons to liters. When you have done that, the previously entered 11.00 feet Distance will become

3.35 meters, tank Diameter will become 3.04 meters and tank Length 6.09 meters.

Likewise, when you enter parameters in meters and later want to display level in feet or inches or volume in gallons, you do not have to reenter the parameters. The controller will automatically recalculate the parameters to feet.

You may practice a little to switch the display units from English to metric and then back to English.

REMEMBER: When finished, press OPERATE key to resume operation!

There are many shortcuts you will discover as you will be using the keyboard. In the interest of simplicity of this manual, they are omitted here.
