1.0 SCOPE

1.1 General. This document specifies the minimum requirements for a Benchtop type Wind Tunnel. This equipment may be of a commercial design or modified commercial design to fit the Navy procurement and test requirement needs. The Benchtop Wind Tunnel is intended to be used by civilian Navy personnel in shore-based ship yard laboratories for calibration support of a wide variety of hot wire type anemometer air velocity measurement devices.

1.2 Usage. Equipment covered by this Calibration Standard Specification (CSS) is intended for use in the calibration of air velocity meters in controlled environments. Air velocity meters requiring calibration are typically hot wire type anemometers with probe diameters ranging from 1/8 to 3/8 inch with calibrated ranges from 25 to 9000 feet per minute (fpm). The requirements of this CSS are tailored to the intended use of the equipment. Specific requirements of MIL- PRF-28800F, as identified in this CSS, are invoked according to the class of equipment.

3.1.1 Equipment Configuration through 3.1.3 Interchangeability.

3.1.1 Equipment Configuration. The Benchtop Wind Tunnel shall consist of: Wind Tunnel test chamber area, Intake and Exhaust manifolds, Variable Speed Motor, and Motor Controller. If the wind tunnel requires the use of restrictive plates to control the air speed in the test chamber area these plates shall also be included with the system.

3.1.1.1 Benchtop Wind Tunnel. The Benchtop Wind Tunnel shall be capable of generating uniform and stable air velocities over the range of 25 to 9000 fpm in the test chamber area to facilitate calibration and testing of hot wire anemometers.

3.1.1.2 Intake and Exhaust Manifolds. The Intake Manifold allows air to enter the wind tunnel and shall contain honeycomb or similar type flow straighteners/baffles to smooth the air velocity flow pattern into the test chamber area. The Exhaust Manifold shall contain the wind tunnel motor and allows air to exit the test chamber area.

3.1.1.3 Variable Speed Motor. Minimum 0 to 10000 RPM or equivalent, 120 VAC single-phase 60 Hz source. Maximum current 15 amps.

3.1.1.4 Motor Controller. A precision motor control that allows adjustment of the air speed in the wind tunnel test area shall be included in the system. The motor controller shall operate using a 120 VAC single-phase 60 Hz source, and shall use a minimum 10 turn potentiometer.

3.1.1.5 Unit Under Test Mounting. The Benchtop Wind Tunnel shall include a port that allows the probe of the unit under test anemometer to be securely mounted in the Wind Tunnel test chamber area.
