About this file
This document is a technical specification for MCM-1 Class (Avenger-class) mine countermeasures ships detailing mooring and service requirements for ship repair and maintenance operations. The MCM-1 is a U.S. Navy mine countermeasures vessel characterized by a wooden hull (oak, fir, cedar) with glass-reinforced plastic coating, measuring 224 feet in length, 39 feet in beam, and drawing approximately 13 to 15 feet of water. The ship is equipped with specialized mine-hunting sonar (AN/SQQ-32), an AN/SLQ-48 mine neutralization system, and diesel propulsion with electric motors. Standard mooring preparations include two 8-foot by 16-foot fenders, 20 to 40-foot brows for accessing different deck levels, and 8-inch bitts for mooring line attachments on both port and starboard sides.
The document specifies detailed service connection requirements for pierside mooring operations, including shore power connections (500 volts, 500 amperes, 60 hertz), potable water connections, fuel connections, and firemain (FM) connections with adapters to convert between U.S. Navy specifications and Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS). The document contains numerous technical diagrams and photographs illustrating specific mooring configurations, connection points, bitt locations, brow placements, and shore-side infrastructure required to support MCM-1 Class vessel maintenance and repair operations at repair facilities, particularly those located on Hokkaido's western coast in Japan.

MCM-1 Class Mooring and Service Requirements
The MCM-1 (Avenger class) is a U.S. Navy mine countermeasures ship, known for its wooden hull with fiberglass coating, specialized mine-hunting sonar (AN/SQQ-32), and the AN/SLQ-48 mine neutralization system, designed to detect and destroy sea mines in littoral environments, with a typical draft of around 15 feet, although it varies slightly by source.
Key Characteristics:
· Type: Mine Countermeasures (MCM) Ship.
· Class: Avenger-class.
· Hull: Wood (oak, fir, cedar) with a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) coating for non-magnetic properties.
· Dimensions:
· Length: 224 ft (68 m).
· Beam (Width): 39 ft (12 m).
· Draft (Depth): Around 13 to 15 ft (4.0 - 4.6 m).
· Propulsion: Diesel engines (Waukesha for first two, Isotta-Franchini for later ships) with electric motors and a bow thruster.
· Armament/Equipment: Mine neutralization system, machine guns, mine-hunting sonar, and sweeping gear.
