Preventative maintenance and repair service agreement for government owned Thermo Electron iCAP 7400 Radial ICP-OES (S/N IC74RA0010; AID# 4523A12660). Estimated cost = Required date = July 16, 2018.
The repair and maintenance of the instrument requires proprietary information exclusive to the manufacturer, Thermo Electron. Several of the parts within the instrument (e.g., the Echelle prism/grating and the optical detector) could not be replaced by vendors other than Thermo Electron because they would not have the knowledge required to properly align these components and perform necessary wavelength calibration. Service also includes software issues and updates and only Thermo Electron would be able to provide these. The instrumentation is unique and complex so therefore only factory-trained Thermo Electron personnel could perform necessary preventative maintenance and repair. Other potential vendors would not have access to, for example, the parts, maintenance procedures, wavelength calibration information, etc. necessary to meet the government’s needs.

Proprietary parts and software for the Thermo Electron iCAP 7400 radial ICP-OES instrument.
The instrument is currently under service contract with Thermo Electron. The current instrument service contract expires July 15, 2018 requiring a new support plan to start on July 16, 2018. This would make the transition seamless in the event of instrument repairs being made during that time and prevent the additional costs associated with a break in service coverage.
