BLOWN OPTIC FIBER (BOF) CABLE Questions and Answers
As of 5/31/2024
Question: How many strands of fiber are being Blown in?
Answer:
Depends: Per PWS para 3.1.5, if able to clear obstruction, one strand would be removed from its current position and that strand would be blown in to the now-unobstructed path. If unable to clear obstruction, per PWS para 3.1.6, 5 ea. strands would need to be removed, a new BOF cable needs to be installed, then 5 ea. strands blown in to the new BOF cable.
Question: Fusion splicing / light duty connectors?
Answer:
Per PWS para 3.1.4, the run goes from a FIB to a FIB, so fiber will need to be spliced at each end.
Question: Is the current BOF SUMITOMO or BLOWLITE? “This can affect the speed of blowing in fiber”
Answer:
Per PWS reference 1 parts list, the 7 tube cable is built to M85045/25-01E (higher level doc is MIL- PRF85045/25). Per recommended components lists (QPDSIS 85045 120625.pdf(dla.mil) and QPDSIS 85045 120625.pdf(dla.mil)), the manufacturer is General Cable
