MIL-DTL-901E Heavyweight Shock Testing and MIL-STD-167-1A Vibration Testing for AN/URC-157

1.0 Introduction

The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Webster Outlying Field (WOLF) Air Traffic Control and Landing System (ATC&LS) requires MIL-DTL-901E Heavyweight Shock Testing and MIL-STD-167-1 Vibration Testing on four principal units of the AN/URC-157 system.

Two of the principal units are mounted inside the AN/SPN-46(V) Unit 29 Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) Rack and the other two principal units are mounted on the AN/SPN-46(V) Unit 24/25 Radar Set Group. The four AN/URC-157 principal units are as follows:

Unit 1 Receiver Transmitter Radio (RTR)-

Unit 2 Communication System Control (CSC) consisting of one Keyboard, Video, Mouse (KVM) and one Central Processing Unit (CPU)-

Unit 3/Unit 4 Attenuator Assembly (AA)-

Unit 5/Unit 6 Directional Antenna Set (DAS)-

2.0 Background

The AN/URC-157 is an interdependent addition to the existing AN/SPN-46 system. NAWCAD requires a source that has the capability and testing equipment/facility capable of MIL-DTL-901E Heavyweight Shock Qualification Testing and MIL-STD-167-1A Vibration Testing. AN/URC-157 equipment will need to be tested while mounted to AN/SPN-46 equipment or equivalent fixtures. This shock and vibration testing is needed to qualify the AN/URC-157 system for installation on CVN class carriers.

3.0 Objective

To conduct MIL-DTL-901E Heavyweight Shock Testing and MIL-STD-167-1 Vibration Testing and pass the required system functional tests. Shock and vibration testing is to be completed within six months after receipt of order (ARO). Test information for the equipment under test (EUT) is as follows:

Unit 29 UPS Rack with Unit 1 and Unit 2 Installed

Dimensions W 27" x D 36" x H 51"

Vibration Tailoring

No tailoring for Unit 29 UPS Rack mounted equipment. Exploratory test done with Unit 3/4 and Unit 5/6 mounted on radar set group. Standard exploratory test frequency range but with amplitudes from variable frequency test. Variable frequency test done normally but with Unit 3/4 and Unit 5/6 mounted on a test fixture. Endurance test done normally with Unit 3/4 and Unit 5/6 mounted on a test fixture.

4.0 Tasks

Develop a shock test procedure in accordance with MIL-DTL-901E (A001) and vibration test procedure in accordance with MIL-STD-167-1A 1.

(A002).

Design any fixtures needed to mount the EUT and any support equipment to the testing machines. Any fixtures used for the shock test shall 2.

meet the requirements of MIL-DTL-901E (A003) and any fixtures used for the vibration test shall meet the requirements of MIL-STD-167-1A (A004).

After approval, fabricate test fixtures needed for each test.3.

Provide sufficient 120 VAC 60 Hz power for the EUT and support equipment during the tests.4.

Receive, offload, and install EUT and support equipment onto test machines/test fixtures for each test. The EUT and all support equipment will 5.

be provided by the customer.

Install seven tri-axial accelerometers (or 21 single axis accelerometers) onto EUT for data collection during the shock test.6.

Perform heavyweight shock test in accordance with MIL-DTL-901E and a 10 Hz deck frequency. Test shall use the following 5 shot test 7.

sequence in order:

Shot 2: 30ft Athwartshipa.

Shot 3: 25ft Athwartshipb.

Shot 4: 20ft Athwartshipc.

Shot 1: 40ft Fore-Aftd.

After this shot, Unit 29 UPS rack is rotated 90 and Unit 24/25 Radar Set i.

Group is rotated from 0 to 65

Shot 4A: 20ft Athwartshipe.

Perform vibration test in accordance with MIL-STD-167-1A using the following tailoring for Unit 24/25 Radar Set Group mounted equipment:8.

Unit 3/4 and Unit 5/6 will be mounted to Unit 24/25 Radar Set Group for the exploratory test. Exploratory test will use the a.

standard frequency range, but with amplitudes from the variable frequency test.

Unit 3/4 and Unit 5/6 will then be mounted to a test fixture for the variable frequency test and endurance test. The variable b.

frequency test and endurance test will otherwise be run normally.

At the completion of testing, remove and move the EUT and support equipment to the next test, or package the equipment for return shipment if 9.

all testing has been completed. Load the packaged equipment when the courier arrives for the return shipment.

Prepare and submit a formal test report for each test after the completion of all testing. Shock test report shall be prepared in accordance with 10.

MIL-DTL-901E (A005), and vibration test report shall be prepared in accordance with MIL-STD-167-1A (A006).
