About this file

This is a Statement of Work for the Submarine Force Museum's procurement of two conservation-grade microclimate museum display cases for historical artifact preservation and exhibition.

The museum requires two mannequin-style museum display cases with specific technical specifications: pedestal-style bases made of Medex painted black with leveling feet and 12-inch height; 5-sided frameless vitrines constructed from 3/8-inch UV-filtering acrylic with interior dimensions of 81 inches high by 35 7/16 inches wide by 35 7/16 inches deep; removable decks made of ODP with aluminum composite panels wrapped in linen fabric (colorway L-5040); trapezoid-shaped label rail risers that reduce deck size by 5.5 inches in each direction; sealed microclimate control systems using silica gel chambers engineered to an air exchange rate between 0.75 and 1 per day; external access panels (approximately 11 inches wide by 4 inches high) covered by gasketed aluminum composite doors; and security screw locking mechanisms with no interior lighting. All materials must be 100% archival and inert to prevent off-gassing or artifact damage. The contractor must demonstrate 40+ years of company-specific experience and 150+ years combined staff experience in fine art and historical artifact display case design and fabrication for not-for-profit museums. Deliverables include design, fabrication, delivery, assembly, installation, and packaging material removal. Delivery must occur between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut. The vendor is responsible for ensuring cases fit through available entrances (8.5 feet high by 7 feet wide, or 9 feet high by 6 feet 10 inches wide) and must provide lift-gate equipped vehicles, as no loading dock is available. The period of performance is 5 months from bid award.

STATEMENT OF WORK

STATEMENT OF WORK

Submarine Force Museum museum display cases

1.0 DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES:

The Submarine Force Museum (SFM) intends to procure two (2) conservation-grade (i.e. made from archival materials that are inert and will not off-gas or cause damage to the artifacts) microclimate museum display cases for use in future exhibits. This is part of a broader strategy to update all cases in the museum to have a uniform appearance and to meet museum preservation standards. These cases will help SFM meet current preservation standards while displaying artifacts from its historic collections, as the current cases which can accommodate mannequins do not meet museum preservation standards and are causing degradation to the artifacts on display. These cases will increase flexibility and mobility when creating new exhibits, as they are moveable, unlike the current cases. Conservation-grade cases will also allow

SFM to borrow artifacts from other institutions which require more stringent display preservation standards than the current cases allow.

These new cases will replace a double mannequin case that was previously loaned to SFM but is now being recalled. These cases will allow SFM to continue displaying the two mannequins assigned to this exhibit, thus preventing disruption of display and the visitor experience. These new cases should align with the design, engineering, and appearance of the ones already installed in the exhibit (see reference photos below; these cases were the first to be designed and engineered as part of the case updating strategy and therefore, they form the benchmark by which all other cases will be created), with any desired differences and exceptions noted here.

The contractor designing and fabricating the cases shall be able to demonstrate specialized experience of 40+ years for the company itself, and 150+ years of combined experience between its staff members, in design and fabrication of fine art and historical artifact display cases specifically for not-for-profit museum use (as opposed to trade shows or for-profit and corporate museums, which have significantly less stringent specifications).

Requirement includes delivery, assembly, installation and removal of packaging material of the following:

Quantity Description*

2 Mannequin-style museum display case with a pedestal base and a 5-sided, frameless vitrine. Total interior dimensions (which encompasses the label rail) shall be 81"H x 35 7/16"W x 35 7/16"D. It shall be made from 100% archival materials that are inert and will not off-gas or damage objects.

Pedestal-style base shall be made of Medex, painted black, with either an eggshell finish or the finish will be negotiated with the client. It will have leveling feet. Base will be 12”H.

Case is sealed and microclimate controlled by a silica gel chamber beneath the deck. The case shall be engineered to an air exchange rate between .75 and 1 per day. This will give it the microclimate capability to maintain the targeted relative humidity inside the case. This compartment shall be accessible externally (i.e. is not accessed through the vitrine) through an opening that is approximately 11”W x 4”H, covered by a gasketed aluminum composite panel door.

The removable deck shall be made of ODP and shall consist of an aluminum composite panel adhered to an aluminum support frame. The deck shall be wrapped in linen fabric. Linen fabric shall be in colorway L-

5040. Deck shall be horizontal and level.

The case shall have a trapezoid shaped label rail riser, on the deck, inside the vitrine. The label rail base shall be 35 7/16"W x 35 7/16", decreasing to 29 15/16”W x 29 15/16”D at the top which is the object deck area (i.e.

this will reduce the size of the deck 5.5” in each direction). The label rail shall add no more than 5” of height to the display height.

The 5-sided, frameless vitrine shall be made from 3/8” thick UV-filtering

Acrylic. Vitrine shall have 1"H x 35 7/16"W x 35 7/16"D interior clearance and one side will be removable for access/installation of artifacts. An archival silicone gasket shall be used to create a seal between the vitrine and the base and shall be secured with screws. A powdercoated aluminum collar shall support the vitrine and accommodate security screws. The aluminum collar and door trim shall be powdercoated black.

The vitrine shall be designed and manufactured so that it can be replaced in case of breakage.

There shall be no interior lighting.

The case shall lock with security screws.

All prospective vendors shall ensure they can meet the requirements prior to placement of bid.
