1. INTRODUCTION.

2. Shipping and Storage Container 21C14061 (CAGE 99207) (figure 1) is designed to support, and protect from damage, one F414 Engine during shipping, storage, and handling. Necessary maintenance for this container will be accomplished by authorized personnel at intermediate and depot level. Maintenance instructions for inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and servicing begin at paragraph 33 of this WP. Work package 003 00 contains procedures for general repair of containers. The Illustrated Parts Breakdown contains identification and description for all replaceable parts and assemblies of this shipping container.

3. SAFETY.

4. Necessary safety warnings and cautions precede the text to which they apply.

5. CONTAINER DESCRIPTION.

6. The F414 Engine Shipping and Storage container is a reinforced aluminum alloy container specifically designed to accommodate one F414 Engine. Integral frame work, brackets, and shock mounts provide protection from damage by external physical forces while built-in humidity and pressure control units monitor the container’s internal environment.

7. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS. The physical characteristics of the container are listed in table 1.

8. MAJOR ASSEMBLIES AND COMPONENTS. The container (figure 2) is comprised of three major assemblies:

a cover assembly (1), a base assembly (11), and an inner support system (9). The major assemblies contain brackets and frame subassemblies to support and protect the F414

Engine. Each container also has components to ensure proper pressure and humidity control.

9. Cover Assembly. The cover assembly (1, figure 2) is a reinforced aluminum alloy shell with 32 upper closure slots which mate with 32 latch assemblies (12) on the base assembly (11). When the cover is latched in position, a gasket, installed in the cover sealing flange, provides an airtight seal at the mating surface.

10. The cover assembly contains 4 lift bars (3) which provide reinforced connecting points for overhead lifting devices, for movement of the cover assembly only. Two inspection ports (8) are installed in the cover assembly to act as viewports. A records receptacle (4), which contains a set of installation instructions (5), is located on the forward end. The cover also contains a humidity indicator (7).

Attached to the cover assembly is a nameplate (6).

11. Base Assembly. The base assembly (11, figure 2) is a reinforced aluminum alloy shell. There are 32 closure latches (12) on the base assembly which mate with slots in the cover assembly. The surface of the closure flange of the base assembly mates with the gasket on the sealing flange of the cover assembly. The resulting surface contact provides a controlled amount of gasket compression to ensure an appropriate seal.

12. The base assembly is equipped with forklift openings

(17) on the front and sides, MK45 hand truck brackets (19) on front and rear, and hoist and towing rings (13) on two sides of the assembly. A desiccant port (15), with relief valve (14) and an air fill valve (18) are located on the forward end. The desiccant port provides access to service the interior desiccant basket without removing the container cover. A pipe plug (16) is located in the bottom of the base. A water and tear-resistant set of installation instructions (5) is cemented to the assembly. Attached to the base assembly is a nameplate (6).

Change 14 Page 5

13. Inner Support System. The inner support system (9, figure 2) consists of an inner suspension support, a suspension support, an aft support assembly and two forward mounting clamps. The inner suspension support is physically attached to the base assembly by eight shock mounts (10). This configuration protects the engine from shock and vibration which may be encountered during handling and transport.

14. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION. The container provides secure, clean, environmental and physical protection for one F414 Engine during handling, transport or storage. An elastomeric shock-mounted support assembly secures the engine at the proper attitude while absorbing shock/vibration forces received by the container during transport and handling.

15. When closed, the container assembly is hermetically sealed and contains a supply of desiccant to protect the engine from possible moisture damage. A humidity indicator (7, figure 2) installed in the forward end of the cover assembly monitors internal humidity. A desiccant port (15) in the forward end of the base assembly enables desiccant to be installed/replaced without removing the container cover.

16. A relief valve (14) installed in the desiccant port prevents excessive pressure or vacuum from developing within the container due to changes in prevailing atmospheric conditions. The valve opens to release pressure above, or permits air to enter when internal vacuum conditions exceed 1.0 ± 0.15 psig. It may also be manually operated to equalize the pressure before opening the container. An air fill valve (18), also located on the base assembly, is used for leak testing.

17. The container cover assembly is latched to the base assembly by 32 adjustable latches (12) mounted in brackets which are secured to the base. Latch adjustment to a predetermined tightening force ensures a tight closure seal.

An installed gasket ensures the seal of the closure mating surfaces. The surface is designed to also act as a spacer to provide a predetermined fixed compression on the gasket and transfer abnormal loads via a metal to metal path from the cover to the base assembly.

18. Each container is equipped with forklift openings (17) on the front and sides, hoist and tow rings (13) on two sides, MK45 hand truck brackets on front and rear (19), and stacking angles (2) on the top corners to facilitate handling and storage. A pipe plug (16) is installed in the bottom of the base assembly to remove any moisture which may accumulate in that area. In addition, two inspection ports (one for flashlight illumination, the other for inspection), and a records receptacle (4) are provided.

19. SUPPORT EQUIPMENT.

20. Support and maintenance of the container requires support equipment such as forklift truck and overhead hoist/crane facilities for purposes of transport, handling, and maintenance or repair.

21. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.

22. A decal containing installation instructions is cemented to the base assembly. An additional set of installation instructions, in a sealed envelope, is stored in the external records receptacle (4, figure 2) located in the forward end of the cover assembly. Figure 3 shows installation instructions, P/N 17A4513P02, as an example.

a. Remove any contamination from closure gasket and sealing surfaces and ensure that gasket is properly seated.

b. Lower cover assembly onto base assembly and secure with 32 latches.

24. HANDLING AND STORAGE.

25. The following procedures for handling and storage of the container apply only to containers and their component parts which are in acceptable repair condition. The container may be loaded or empty, but it shall be closed and secured prior to being moved by forklift or hoist/crane.

Since handling and storage procedures require the use of forklift equipment and/or overhead-rigged hoists or cranes, a minimum of two people are required for guidance control and stability of the load while in motion.

26. Forklift Truck Handling. Forklift trucks of suitable capacity must be used for handling and transport of the container.

Forklift truck handling of an uncovered container base or base with an unsecured cover is prohibited. Failure to observe the above could be hazardous to personnel and/or result in damage to the container and its contents.

The container center of balance will vary depending upon whether it is empty or contains a F414 Engine. Ensure that forklift tines are fully inserted prior to lifting container. Failure to do so could be hazardous to personnel and/or result in damage to container and contents.

a. Adjust forklift tines, as necessary, to obtain proper load balance.

b. Position forklift tines into the openings located on the front or sides of the container base assembly and raise container from deck.

c. Transport container to desired location.

d. Lower and position container at desired location and carefully remove tines from container.

27. End Maneuvering. The towing rings, on the base only, permit container end maneuvering by dragging the container. MK45 hand truck brackets on front and rear of container permit end maneuvering using MK45 hand trucks.

28. Forklift Maneuvering. By positioning a forklift truck, at either end, the container may be towed with cables attached to the towing rings on the container base assembly.

29. Hoist and Crane Handling. The container is designed to permit handling by overhead rigged hoists or cranes using a four-point cable or chain sling as follows:

All personnel shall stay clear of the area beneath any load during hoist/crane handling.

NOTE

Two people are required for the following procedure and for guidance and control of container while in motion.

a. Attach a cable hook to each of the four lifting rings of the base assembly.

After adjustment, repeat step c.

d. Raise container to desired height. With personnel guiding container attitude, transport to desired location.

e. Lower container to desired location and remove cable or sling hooks from container lifting openings.

30. Container Stacking. Containers are designed to permit vertical stacking by using the stacking brackets of the base and stacking angles of the cover assembly. The brackets on each base assembly are designed to mate with the stacking angles of the cover assembly. The number of containers which may be stacked vertically will be established for each site or ship (and/or physical space limitations), but shall not exceed two containers. Proceed as follows for container stacking:

All personnel shall stay clear of the area beneath any load during overhead hoist/crane handling.

Personnel guiding the container to its stacking position shall guide container from a position which ensures hands are clear of stacking points.

NOTE

Two people are required for guidance and control during the following procedures.

a. Position the initial container in designated stacking location.

b. Attach hoist or crane cables to container to be stacked, in accordance with paragraph 29 above. Ensure containers are oriented in same manner so same sides will mate (left side to left side, etc.).

c. Raise second container to a height no less than 4 inches (10.16 cm) above the stacking bars of the in-position container.

Ensure that stacking plates are firmly seated against stacking angles. Failure to do so could result in personnel injury and/or container/ contents damage.

d. Align upper container so that angles mate with the bars of lower container and slowly lower container into position.

e. Ensure brackets and stacking angles are properly mated before easing tension on hoist cables and disengaging hooks.

31. INTERMEDIATE/DEPOT LEVEL MAINTENANCE.

32. Maintenance should be performed at the periods or events designated by the applicable organization or activity.

NOTE

No maintenance shall be authorized prior to completion of inspection.

33. VISUAL INSPECTION. There are two categories of visual inspection, external and internal.

34. External Inspection. The external inspection shall be performed with the container in the closed configuration.

37. CORROSION CONTROL. Apply general-purpose detergent MIL-D-16791 Type 1, or equivalent, diluted with water, and wash container with a soft bristle brush (outside). Inside of container may require solvents to remove oils and fuel using cloth rags or wipes. To remove shipping labels use Sprayon SP615 (order number SC0615000) or equivalent environmentally friendly paint remover.

38. LUBRICATION. There are no parts on the container assembly which will normally require lubrication.

39. HUMIDITY CONTROL. Internal container humidity is controlled by moisture absorbent desiccant. A humidity indicator mounted on the container cover indicates degree of humidity by a graded color method. When the color indicates an internal relative humidity of 40 percent or more, the desiccant should be replaced with sixty 8-unit bags (480 units) of normal desiccant MIL-D-3464, Type I in each desiccant compartment. The indicator will return to an acceptable indication within 24 hours after replacement of desiccant. Humidity indicator inspection periods should be tailored to the prevailing atmospheric conditions of the local area. Humidity must be controlled or the result could be the accumulation of water within the container. In the event of accumulated water, the drain plug, located in bottom of container base assembly, must be removed to eliminate water or other liquids.

40. REPAIR PROCEDURES.

NOTE

Refer to Illustrated Parts Breakdown for location, quantity, and identification of container parts.

41. Items designated as repairable or replaceable are identified by their SM&R code in the Illustrated Parts Breakdown section of this WP. Refer to paragraphs 33 to
