About this file
This document is a Technical Specification for an Interface Cable that enables the use of legacy DT-304/PDR and DT-643( )/PDR beta frisker probes with the Radiological Detection System (RDS) Base Unit. The interface cable is required to provide a 900V +/- 50V high voltage power supply to the legacy probes, display probe status on the RDS Base Unit, meet various environmental, human factors, and safety requirements, and be maintainable at the depot level. Verification testing methods are detailed to ensure the interface cable meets all specified requirements. This Technical Specification is attached to a pre-solicitation notice for the procurement of up to 3,700 interface cables over a 5-year period by the Department of the Navy Naval Sea Systems Command. The solicitation is expected to be released on 22 February 2024.

1 SCOPE
1.1 PURPOSE
This specification defines the technical requirements and test methodologies for the
Radiological Detection System (RDS) Base Unit to Legacy Probe Interface, herein referred to as “the interface.” The purpose of this interface is to enable use of the DT- 304/PDR and DT-643( )/PDR Beta Frisker Probes with the RDS Base Unit as an alternative to the RDS Small-Area Beta/Gamma (SABG) Contamination Probe.
1.2 INTRODUCTION
The Navy currently utilizes the shielded DT-304/PDR, connected to an IM-265/PDQ
RADIAC Meter via a DT-685/PDQ Beta Probe Interface or connected directly to an IM- 271/PD Frisker Station, to frisk for beta contamination. For surveys performed in areas with lower background levels, the Navy uses the unshielded DT-643( )/PDR. It is necessary to connect this probe to an IM-265/PDQ or IM-271/PD in the same fashion as the DT-304/PDR. The Radiological Detection System (RDS) Base Unit will replace the IM-265/PDQ and IM-271/PD for all applicable Navy end uses. There is not currently a direct equivalent to the DT-304/PDR offered within the RDS suite. The Small-Area Beta/Gamma (SABG) Contamination Probe, which is the primary solution provided by the RDS for surveying for beta contamination, does not normally come with a shield.
This makes the SABG more akin to the unshielded DT-643( )/PDR. An optional aluminum-clad lead shield is available for purchase with the SABG that would make the probe equivalent to the DT-304/PDR. However, the NAVSEA RADIAC Program has determined that it is significantly more cost-effective to design and build an interface between the RDS Base Unit and the DT-304/PDR. The interface will utilize existing SABG technology and firmware to the maximum extent possible, but meet a new form factor. This interface will also allow the DT-643( )/PDR to be compatible with the RDS Base Unit as it uses the same high voltage circuitry and pancake GM tube as the DT-
304/PDR.
