1. Structure contributing to the longitudinal strength of the craft shall be continuous through transverse structure. This structure includes longitudinal framing, deck and hull plating. Beam ends shall land on other structural framing members. Where beam ends must land on unsupported plating, they shall be modified to prevent puncturing of the plating by end rotation by installing headers, landing the beam end on a pad, or terminating the stiffener end 1 inch from the plating and sniping the web and flange 60 degrees.

2. Where a structural bulkhead or superstructure side crosses a structural bulkhead, web frame or deep girder below that deck, forming a knife edge support, chocks shall be fitted to the under member in the plane of the crossing bulkhead to distribute the load. Where the bulkhead above or below has a stiffener in the plane of the crossing member, chocks need not be fitted, provided the stiffener is not sniped. Strength members which are subjected to high tensile stresses shall be designed so that dependence is not placed on the strength of the metal normal to its plane of rolling. Where this is impracticable, through connections or other means shall be provided to minimize the possibility of failure due to plate laminations.

3. Recesses which would not be readily accessible for cleaning shall be avoided.

4. Openings - Openings in the principal longitudinal strength members of the hull and superstructure, such as Main Deck and shell, shall be separated and not aligned in a transverse plane. Where openings are close together, they shall be combined to form a single opening.

Bottom side girders shall not have lightening holes in the frame space adjacent to transverse floors. Transverse floors shall not have lightening holes in the longitudinal space adjacent to the center keel or side girders.

3. Longitudinals and stringers shall be laid off in conjunction with shell plating, framing, floors and bulkheads so that they may best contribute to the structural strength of the Target and support the shell. They shall be as nearly normal to shell plating as practicable. Clearance shall be provided between longitudinals and stringers, and the butts of plating.

- 24 -

4. Changes in direction and scantlings shall be gradual. Changes in direction shall be made at a bulkhead or web frame. The taper at changes in depth of longitudinals, stringers and their end brackets shall not exceed 20 degrees.
