About this file
This file is a Questions and Answers document for the GAU-24 Sources Sought announcement (Notice ID N00019-26-RFPREQ-WPM242-0096). The Q&A clarifies key technical and contractual requirements for potential offerors responding to the Naval Air Systems Command's market research initiative to identify manufacturers capable of producing the GAU-24/A 7.62MM Aircraft Machine Gun.
The corrected capability statement submission deadline is 13 February 2026. Regarding technical requirements, the GAU-24/A includes only the gun and feeder/delinker, with no ancillary equipment or weapon system integration hardware. FN America is the approved barrel manufacturer, but all other components must be produced or sourced by the contractor, who must be capable of manufacturing 100 percent of the system. The weapon will undergo proof testing with high-pressure ammunition, magnetic particle inspection of barrels, and Computed Tomography scanning for cracks in the titanium rotor, followed by government test-firing of approximately 100 rounds at an acceptance facility. Compatibility testing with civilian M134 manufacturers will be performed by the government rather than the contractor. The effort does not require development of a Corrosion Prevention and Control Plan or provision of protective covers. A military specification is currently under development based on the GAU-2B/A specification, and the government retains the ability to qualify additional approved sources beyond the initial award recipient.

Q&A_Notice ID N00019-26-RFPREQ-WPM242-0096 GAU-24 Sources Sought Questions & Answers
Q1. The sources sought announcement lists Jan 28, 2026 11:59 PM EST as the due date/ time in the header of the announcement but in Submittal Instructions states capability statements must be received on or before 13 February 2026. Is the due date 28 JAN or 13 FEB?
A1. The sources sought response is due by 13 February 2026. This has been updated in the announcement header.
Q2. Has the GAU-24/A, built from the TDP, been through any TOP 03-2-45A testing?
A2. Yes.
Q3. Will the Contractor be required to perform parts interchangeability/compatibility testing with parts from the various non-DOD civilian M134 manufacturers ex: Dillon Aero, Profense, Garwood, Highground etc.?
A3. Compatibility testing will be performed by the Government. All vendors are expected to meet the production requirements of the Government TDP, so no variation is expected between vendors.
Q4. Will this requirement be a complete system to include the Gun Control Unit, Feeder/Delinker as well as the ammunition booster and magazine?
A4. The top level GAU-24 includes the gun and the feeder/delinker. No ancillary equipment or weapon system integration hardware will be included.
Q5. Are there already approved/expected suppliers for some of the parts, such as barrels, or will the contractor be required to find sourcing for 100% of the gun?
A5. FN America is currently approved to manufacture the barrel. All other components will need to be produced/sourced by the offeror.
Q6. Does the GAU-24/A have a current military specification available, and if so will it be provided in addition to the TDP? Ex: MIL-M-45920 was used for the GAU-2B/A A6. A specification is currently being developed based on the GAU-2B/A spec.
Q7. Is there a required “proof test”, utilizing high pressure ammunition, of the weapon once manufacturing is complete? If so what will the non destructive testing requirements be?
A7. Yes, likely mirroring GAU-2B/A requirement. Non-destructive testing requirements will include magnetic particle inspection on the barrels and Computed Tomography or similar for cracks in the titanium rotor.
Q8. Is there a test fire requirement of the weapon once manufacturing is complete? If so how many rounds are required.
A8. Yes, 100 rounds maximum. The Government anticipates that this will be performed by the Government acceptance facility.
Q9. Is the intent for this Sources Sought to find a vendor(s) that will produce all parts? In other words, you do not want someone who will just manufacture the barrels?
A9. The Government intends to award to a vendor that will produce all parts of the system.
Q10. Is it a requirement for the contractor to develop, deliver, maintain, and implement a Corrosion Prevention and Control Plan (CPCP) to identify corrosion mitigation measures for operation, storage, and sustainment?
A10. No, the effort does not include a requirement for the contractor to develop, deliver, maintain, and implement a CPCP.
Q11. For corrosion mitigation, will it be required for the contractor to provide a fitted protective cover that is waterproof, yet air-permeable (to prevent moisture buildup) as a Basic Item of Issue (BII) and Component of End Item (COEI) for storage and shipment?
A11. No, it is not required for the contractor to provide a fitted protective cover for corrosion mitigation.
Q12. How does NAVAIR intend to allow alternate sources for this project?
A12. The Government has the ability to qualify additional approved sources.
