Table 1 System Minimum Security Configuration Requirements
Line Number
Technical Requirement/Feature
Security Requirement
1.0
USB ports
Removed or not present in hardware. If these ports cannot be removed (i.e. they are required for connectivity requirements) procedures to disable them must be provided by the vendor.
2.0
DVD/CD Drives
Removed or not present in hardware. If these drives cannot be removed (i.e. they are required to load software), procedures to disable them must be provided by the vendor.
3.0
Wired Networking
Networking capabilities (i.e. hostname, IP address, DNS, DHCP) must be securely configurable.
4.0
Wireless Networking
Removed or not present in hardware. If wireless network adapters cannot be removed they must be disabled via software configuration.
5.0
User Accounts
Accounts on the system must be individually attributable to a specific user; for example there should not be a single shared administrator account. If the system is UNIX based, access to the root account should be disabled or should require logging in as a normal user first to access. Accounts should support or enforce strong password protection rules, i.e. passwords should require uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters, passwords must be longer than 8 characters, passwords must be changed in accordance with security policy (i.e. every 90 days).
6.0
Remote Access Capabilities
All remote access capabilities (i.e. SSH, FTP, SMB, web-based login) must be documented. Procedures to disable unnecessary capabilities must be provided. Remote access capabilities must use secure protocols (i.e. SSH or SFTP, not RSH or FTP).
7.0
Web Server
If the system’s remote access capabilities include a built-in web server, this server should be removed or disabled. If the web server cannot be disabled (for example it is required for system administration), the type of web server used (i.e. Apache, BEA WebLogic, IIS) should be identified, and procedures to configure the web server securely should be provided.
8.0
Auditing and Logging
All access to the system must be logged and auditable. Administrative actions taken on the system must be attributable to individual users.
9.0
Web Browser
If the system includes a web browser, it should be removed or disabled. If the browser is a required component, the type of web browser used should be identified, it must require a user login to access, and it should be configured securely.
10.0
Internal Operating System
Must be identified. Must be an operating system that is still supported by the original vendor; for example Windows NT would not be acceptable. If possible the operating system should be built to a secure baseline (i.e. DoDIIS Baseline), otherwise the operating system should be configurable to meet DoD 8500.2 security controls for UNCLASSIFIED or SECRET networks, and NIST 800-53 security controls for TOP SECRET/SCI and above networks. If the operating system cannot be reconfigured (i.e. it is built on a read-only drive), it must ship in a secure configuration from the vendor. If the operating system is a vendor-proprietary operating system, or a vendor-customized version of a commercial or open source operating system, the vendor must provide documentation regarding the operating system’s security configuration.
11.0
Email Capabilities
Removed or not present. If this capability is needed to support operational requirements, procedures to disable it and to configure it securely when enabled must be provided.
12.0
Patch Management
Hardware-specific patches must be provided by the vendor on a regular schedule, and procedures to apply such patches must be documented and provided. Operating system or software-specific patches not released by the vendor must be loadable by the customer. Such patches should be tested by the vendor, and any patches which would damage the system’s functionality should be documented.
13.0
Secure Print
The hardware should support secure print job capabilities, including PIN code or password protection for all print jobs.
File details come from the government source that posted it.
