About this file
This Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is issued by Gainesville Renewable Energy Center, LLC for Fly Ash, a solid powder substance generated from wood combustion. The document comprehensively details the physical, chemical, and safety characteristics of fly ash, highlighting its potential hazards, including eye and skin irritation, respiratory risks, and the presence of crystalline silica, which has been classified as a potential carcinogen. The MSDS provides critical information for handling, storage, personal protective equipment requirements, and emergency response procedures.
The fly ash contains multiple chemical components including calcium oxide (45-65%), potassium hydroxide (10-15%), silicon dioxide (10-15%), and magnesium oxide (4-8%), with a pH range of 10-12. The material is considered hazardous under OSHA regulations, with potential chronic health effects including lung damage and pneumoconiosis. The document indicates the substance is not flammable, slightly water-soluble, and stable under normal conditions. Regulatory information shows the fly ash is listed on the TSCA and DSL inventories, and is classified as having both immediate and delayed health hazards. Recommended personal protective equipment includes safety goggles, work gloves, and respiratory protection when dust generation is possible.

OSHA regulatory status This product is considered hazardous under 29 CFR 1910.1200 (Hazard Communication).
Potential health effects Routes of exposure Eye contact. Inhalation. Ingestion. Skin contact.
Eyes Causes eye burns. Exposed individuals may experience eye tearing, redness, and discomfort.
Skin Causes skin irritation. If wetted: Causes skin burning.
Inhalation Dust irritating to respiratory tract. Frequent inhalation of dust over a long period of time increases the risk of developing lung diseases.
Ingestion Causes digestive tract burns.
Target organs Digestive tract. Eyes. Lungs. Respiratory tract. Skin.
Chronic effects Prolonged and repeated overexposure to dust can lead to pneumoconiosis. Prolonged breathing of high levels of crystalline silica can cause silicosis. Also, airborne crystalline silica is possibly carcinogenic to humans.
Signs and symptoms Exposed individuals may experience eye tearing, redness, and discomfort. Irritation of nose and throat. May irritate and cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.
Coughing.
Potential environmental effects Harmful effect due to pH shift.

4. First Aid Measures
First aid procedures
Eye contact Do not rub eyes. Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Remove contact lenses, if present. Get medical attention immediately.
Skin contact Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing separately before reuse.
Inhalation Dust irritates the respiratory system, and may cause coughing and difficulties in breathing.
If symptomatic, move to fresh air. Get medical attention if symptoms persist.
Ingestion Rinse mouth thoroughly with water and give large amounts of milk or water, if person is conscious. Never give anything by mouth to a victim who is unconscious or is having convulsions. Get medical attention immediately.
Notes to physician Provide general supportive measures and treat symptomatically. Symptoms may be delayed.
5. Fire Fighting Measures
Flammable properties The product is not flammable.
Extinguishing media Suitable extinguishing media Use fire-extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding materials.
Unsuitable extinguishing media Do not use water jet.
Protection of firefighters Protective equipment and precautions for firefighters Selection of respiratory protection for fire fighting: follow the general fire precautions indicated in the workplace. Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.
Fire fighting equipment/instructions Use water spray to prevent dust formation, absorb heat, keep containers cool and protect fire-exposed material. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk.
Hazardous combustion Products None known.
HMIS Rating (Scale 0-4): Health = 2 Fire = 1 Reactivity = 0 NFPA Rating (Scale 0-4): Health = 2 Fire = 1 Reactivity = 0
6. Accidental Release Measures
Personal precautions Avoid inhalation of dust and contact with skin and eyes. See Section 8 of the
MSDS for Personal Protective Equipment.
Environmental precautions For large (industrial) releases, prevent spill from entering a waterway.
Environmental manager must be informed of all major spillages.
Methods for containment Avoid generation and spreading of dust. Sweep up or vacuum up spillage and collect in suitable container for disposal.
Methods for cleaning up Avoid dust formation. Use a vacuum cleaner. If not possible, moisten dust with water before it is collected with a shovel or broom. Vacuums used for this purpose should be equipped with HEPA filters. For waste disposal, see Section 13 of the MSDS.
Other information Clean up in accordance with all applicable regulations.
7. Handling and Storage
Handling Use work methods which minimize dust production. Use only in well-ventilated areas.
Avoid inhalation of dust and contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash hands after handling. Promptly remove any clothing that becomes wet or contaminated. Observe good industrial hygiene practices.
Storage Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Store away from incompatible materials.
8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Engineering controls Provide sufficient ventilation for operations causing dust formation. Observe occupational exposure limits and minimize the risk of exposure. Provide easy access to water supply and eye wash facilities.
Personal protective equipment Eye / face protection Wear approved safety goggles.
Skin protection When handling dry product work gloves of cloth, canvas or leather are recommended.
When handling wet product gloves of neoprene, butyl or nitrile are recommended. Use of protective coveralls and long sleeves is recommended.
Respiratory protection If engineering controls do not maintain airborne concentrations below recommended exposure limits (where applicable) or to an acceptable level (in countries where exposure limits have not been established), an approved respirator must be worn. Use a NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying respirator as needed to control exposure. Consult with respirator manufacturer to determine respirator selection, use, and limitations. Use positive pressure, air-supplied respirator for uncontrolled releases or when air purifying respirator limitations may be exceeded. Follow respirator protection program requirements (OSHA 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2) for all respirator use.
General hygiene Considerations Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Routinely wash work clothing and protective equipment to remove contaminants.
