About this file
This document is a Minimum Requirements Document (MRD) for a battery-powered, portable LM-80-33A Variable Night Sky Projector manufactured by Hoffman Engineering. The MRD states that the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Visualization Laboratory requires this projector to provide movable test environments with visible and infrared light equivalent to various real-world night sky conditions, as part of their research on advanced night vision imaging systems (NVIS).
The key requirements are for the projector to have four pre-set night sky illumination levels (full moon, quarter moon, starlight, overcast) as well as a user-selectable level that matches the spectral energy distribution of the night sky for NVIS evaluations. The vendor shall provide one unit of the Hoffman LM-80-33A projector and associated accessories. This requirement is the subject of a related Federal Contract Opportunity, which is a Special Notice for the intent to award a sole source purchase order to Hoffman Engineering, LLC for the LM Variable Night Sky Projector, under NAICS code 333316.

Minimum Requirements Document
Hoffman LM-80-33A Variable Night Sky Projector.
Document Date: 27 August 2024
Background & Scope:
AFRL Visualization Laboratory research on advanced night vision imaging systems (NVIS) requires movable test environments in which resolution and other targets are lit with visible and infrared light equivalent to real world illumination under various night sky conditions representative of those experienced during night operations. The Hoffman Engineering portable, battery powered LM-33-80A Variable Night Sky Projector is the only commercial product available with the performance required.
Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
The vendor shall provide a quantity of one (1) Hoffman LM-80-33A Variable Night Sky Projector and ancillary items.
Minimum performance parameters/salient characteristics:
-Shall have a portable battery operated night sky projector system calibrated to project four preset levels of night sky illumination (full moon, quarter moon, starlight, overcast)
-Shall have a user-selected level for unique testing, with internal filters that provide match to the spectral energy distribution of the night sky spectra for evaluations of night vision imaging systems (NVIS) and cockpit NVIS compatibility
-Shall have calibration data supplied in both NVIS irradiance and NVIS lux
