Heavywall zinc coated rigid steel conduit shall conform to Federal Specification WW-C-581. Rigid steel conduit may be used in all locations. Coated rigid steel conduit shall be used for installation below slab or grade, or underground. The conduit shall be factory coated with .04 inch of polyvinyl chloride on the exterior. Any damaged coating shall be repaired in accordance with the manufacturer specifications. All fittings for use with rigid steel conduit shall be of the threaded type of the same materials as the conduit.

Where conduits enter boxes or cabinets without threaded hubs, double locknuts shall be used plus an insulated metallic grounding bushing on the open end.

Where conduit enters exterior boxes watertight grounding type hubs with a grounding bushing shall be used.

16-4.2.2 Electric Metallic Tubing (EMT)

EMT shall conform to Federal Spec. WW-C-563. EMT may be used only in dry interior locations, and where not subject to physical damage. EMT shall not be used on circuits above 600 volts.

Fittings to be used with EMT shall be standard compression fittings designed for use with this type of conduit. Where box fittings are used with only a locknut, a smooth bushing shall be installed on the fitting end.

16-5 CONDUCTORS

16-5.1 Color Coding

All branch circuit and feeder conductors shall be color coded as specified hereinafter. The color coding shall be continuous throughout the facility on each phase conductor to its point of utilization so that the conductor phase connection is readily identifiable in any part of the installation. The equipment grounding conductor shall be as specified herein before. Neutral conductors shall be continuous white unless more than one system is run in the same raceway, box, or other type enclosure. The neutral of the other systems shall be white with identifiable colored tracers (not green).

Where color coding is not available in the larger size conductors, the conductors shall be color coded by use of color coded tape, half lapped for a minimum length of 3 inches. Where conductors are color coded in this manner, they shall be color coded in all junction and pull boxed accessible raceways, panelboards, outlets and switches, as well as at all terminations. Conductors in accessible raceways shall be coded in such manner that by removing or opening any cover, the coding will be visible.

Phase conductors shall be color coded as follows:

Single Phase Three Phase

120/240 Volts 120/208 or 240 Volts

Line A - Black Phase A - Black Line B - Red Phase B - Red Phase C - Blue

Grounded conductors shall be color coded as follows:

Equipment ground – green

16-5.2 Insulated conductors

Unless otherwise indicated, insulated conductors shall be copper with thermoplastic or thermosetting insulation, type THW, THWN, and XHHW for general use, or type THHN for use in dry locations only, all insulated for 600V in accordance with Federal Specification J-C-30. Conductors #10 AWG and smaller shall be solid, and conductors #8 AWG and larger shall be stranded. Minimum branch circuit conductor size shall be #12 AWG. Minimum control wire size shall be #14 AWG unless noted otherwise.

16-5.3 Conductor Identification

In addition to color coding, all line, phase, and neutral conductors shall be identified by plastic-coated, self-sticking printed markers, permanently attached stamped metal fail markers, or equivalent means as approved by the RE. Conductor identification shall be provided at all terminations, and in all junction boxed through which these conductors pass. Conductor identification shall be provided within each enclosure where a tap, splice, or termination is made.

16-5.4 Splices

All splices for power cables shall be by hydraulically crimped barrel that utilize a minimum force of 12 tons. Heavy wall heat-shrink insulation tubing that is UL listed for cable voltage and direct burial shall cover each splice. Wire nuts are acceptable for interior splices of #12 AWG cables.

16-6 QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS

16-6.1 Submittals

Before installing any materials or equipment, the Contractor shall submit the following to the RE for approval:

a. Conduit and connectors

b. Cable

c. Junction Boxes

d. Grounding

e. Splice
