DNR PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION
Mitchell State Park Day Use Area Improvements
6090 E. M-115, Cadillac, MI 49601 ARPA Project Statement, August 2023
The DNR Parks and Recreation Division is requesting design and construction services assistance with the Mitchell State Park Day Use Area Improvements including the replacement of the multipurpose combination structure (picnic shelter, toilet building and changing courts); reconstruction/repaving of the parking lot; and the addition of new connecting accessible walkways throughout the day use area.
PROJECT BACKGROUND:
Mitchell State Park Day Use Area is located on the east shore of Lake Michell along M- 115 across from the State Park Campground in Cadillac, Michigan. The Day Use Area and related structures is highly visible from the heavily traveled M- Highway. The area is known for its boating, fishing, lake shore activities including swimming, picnicking and other summer fun. Note: the boating access site and launch are not part of this project although they share common access off M-115.
The existing combination building (constructed in the 1960s and 1970s) is an assemblage of multiple structures under a common roof. The restroom doors open into the picnic shelter space creating an awkward layout and shared use of space. Future building(s) design and layout will provide for privacy and opportunity for shelter rental.
The parking lot contains approximately 100 spaces, is in poor condition and floods during significant rain events. Reconstruction/repaving of the parking area will also require effective stormwater management/ drainage improvements to eliminate flooding concerns.
