About this file
This is a Minimum Requirements Document for a federal procurement of Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror technology by AFRL/RWTSH (Air Force Research Laboratory/Rocket, Weapon, Space and Hypersonics Directorate). The 137-actuator MEMS Deformable Mirror is required to support research and development of Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensing capabilities for hypersonics at the KHILS Laboratory. The device will project aberrated wavefronts from an infrared scene projector to a hypersonic sensor-under-test during real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) missile engagement simulations, introducing controllable wavefront aberrations that replicate aero-optical and aero-thermal image distortions caused by heated windows, plasma, and turbulence effects in hypersonic environments.
The salient characteristics are firm requirements with the following specifications: continuous membrane/MEMS type with minimum 137 actuators; aperture size between 4mm minimum and 8mm maximum with minimum 12 actuators across the aperture; 5.5µm actuator physical stroke; response time of 450/650 microseconds (10%-90% rise/fall); inter-actuator coupling less than 23%; zero hysteresis; sub-nanometer step size; surface figure less than 20nm RMS; window transmission greater than 95% across the 1.5–5.0µm waveband; 2kHz driver frame rate; 14-bit resolution; open-loop calibration capability; and mandatory delivery within 14 weeks. Additional requirements include a driver electronics/interface certificate documenting volatile and non-volatile memory specifications and instructions for memory clearing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT
Title: Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror (DM)
Document Date: 1 June 2026
Scope:
AFRL/RWTSH requires a 137-actuator Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Deformable Mirror
(DM) to support research and development of new Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensing capabilities for hypersonics at the KHILS Laboratory. Specifically, this DM will project aberrated wavefronts from an infrared scene projector to a hypersonic sensor-under-test during real-time, hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) missile engagement simulations.
Background:
The Kinetic Kill Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (KHILS) Laboratory requires a MEMS-based
Deformable Mirror (DM) to simulate high-speed aero-optical and aero-thermal image distortions for real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing of hypersonic seeker sensors. This is a time-sensitive requirement; the DM must be integrated into a newly developed HWIL testbed to support an urgent customer program.
Operationally, the DM will introduce controllable wavefront aberrations into an infrared scene projector, replicating the effects of a sensor looking through a heated window subject to plasma and aero-optical turbulence. These hypersonic effects will be incorporated into a real-time, 6-degree-of-freedom flyout simulation representing true hypersonic missile trajectories. The completed testbed, enabled by this DM, represents a novel capability for evaluating IR-guided hypersonic weapons. Following sensor integration and initial testing, the capability will be demonstrated to HITS program stakeholders and the OUSW customer, with subsequent technology transition planned for tri-service and Missile Defense Agency
(MDA) Department of War (DoW) test facilities.
