About this file
This document is an Inactive Mine Site Field Form from the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety, documenting surveys of two mine sites within the Brasscap Project (Project #7684, OSM Project #561) located in San Juan County, Colorado. The first site surveyed on September 6, 2012, is the Fire King Lode adit (Poughkeepsie ID #35) accessed via Hurricane Pass near Lake Como at elevation 11,753 feet, featuring a rock-lined arch opening measuring 6 by 4 feet with a depth exceeding 40 feet and containing standing water in a winze. The second site surveyed on August 30, 2012, is an unpatented USFS adit (Poughkeepsie ID #36) accessed via Engineer Pass at elevation 10,629 feet, featuring a square opening measuring 4 by 4 feet with a depth exceeding 30 feet and damp conditions. The Fire King Lode site requires closure via installation of a grate per Standard Work Specifications 11 with hatch access and bat ladder to address a dangerous water-filled winze behind a broken timber platform approximately 15 feet inside the opening, while the USFS site requires hand backfill with existing waste rock and contractor-selected bulkhead construction. Mine dump volumes total 100 cubic yards at the Fire King Lode site and 200 cubic yards at the USFS site.
The preferred closure method for the Fire King Lode adit is a grate with alternative methods including backfill and bat grate with access structures, while the preferred method for the USFS adit is backfill with alternatives including bulkhead or grated corrugated steel pipe. The Fire King Lode site presents challenges including no good equipment access and the presence of timber platform and debris, whereas the USFS site has good equipment access and possible bat habitat considerations requiring protective measures. Both sites are located on USFS and BLM lands designated for recreation and wildlife use, and both contain existing conditions and structures requiring remediation before closure can be completed.
