About this file
This document is an Addendum 1 for Bid Number MINES24080 issued by Colorado School of Mines on May 02, 2024, addressing submitted questions regarding a biological and medical waste management contract. The solicitation seeks a qualified contractor to collect and transport medical/biological/infectious waste from two campus buildings: the General Research Lab Building and Alderson Hall. The waste collection will involve multiple lab locations with varying numbers of bins, and service frequency is anticipated to be once or twice per month. The current vendor is Trilogy Medical Waste, and the service will be managed on a will-call basis to accommodate fluctuating needs throughout the academic year.
The addendum provides detailed insights into the current waste management environment, including specific lab locations, container sizes (32-gallon), and waste characteristics. Notably, the only waste requiring incineration is dissection waste from animal parts in Alderson Hall, with no chemotherapy or pharmaceutical waste generated. The document clarifies that Mines Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides sharps containers, with approximately 20 sharps containers and 20 medical waste containers currently in use. The bid requires multiple specific insurance policies, each needing its own coverage, and emphasizes compliance with Department of Transportation and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment regulations.

# Question Response 1 Who is the current vendor that is providing services?
Trilogy Medical Waste
2 What are the current rates? Information currently not available 3 Will you be able to provide the address for each of the labs as well as the average number of pickups that are completed each year and average number of containers of waste that is generated per pickup or per year for each location?
Waste is generated in two buildings.
General Research Lab Building (GRL) - 1310 Maple St.
Lab Locations:
331 – 3-bins 340 – 1-bins 341 - 1-bins 242 – 1-bin
Alderson Hall - 1613 Illinois St.
Lab Locations:
281 – 1-bins 282 – 2-bins 286 – 1-bins 288 – 2-bins 287 – 3 Bins and 2 yellow bins for dissection waste 294 – 2-bins 392 – 1-bin 491 – 2-bins
Service frequency is once or twice per month.
4 Will any of the sites be generating any waste that will require treatment via incineration such as chemotherapy, pathological or pharmaceutical waste? If so, which type of
Alderson Hall 287/291 generates dissection waste that requires incineration. Dissection waste is limited to animal parts. Otherwise no chemotherapy or pharmaceutical waste is generated at Mines.
waste will be generated, which sites will generate this type of waste and what is the estimated number of containers of this type of waste that the sites will generate per pickup or per year? If pharmaceutical waste is disposed of, is the pharma waste hazardous or non-hazardous?
5 It states that vendors should provide sharps containers. Is the current vendor providing each of the sites sharps containers? If so, what is the size of sharps containers provided? Are the sharps containers disposable or reusable?
Are the sharps containers included in the disposal fee or does the School purchase the containers separately? What is the average number of sharps containers that each site disposes of per pickup or per year?
This was a mistake. Mines EHS provides our research labs with sharps containers.
6 What is the current size(s) of medical waste collection containers in the labs?
32-Gallon
7 Can labs be set up for recurring service intervals rather than will call?
Mines prefers a will call service. Service needs fluctuate throughout the academic year. Fewer pick up requests are required during the summer and during breaks in class schedules.
8 Will all labs be serviced during the same service call, or will individual labs call when needing service?
All labs in a building are serviced during the same service call. If a lab in the GRL requests a pick up, we service the entire building. We use the same approach in Alderson Hall. On occasion, contractor will need to service both buildings. Mines can be flexible and schedule up to a week in advance.
9 How long on average can our driver expect to wait for an escort from an EHS employee?
45 minutes to an hour
10 What is the current vendor's pricing? Information currently not available 11 Who is the current waste disposal vendor? Trilogy Medical Waste 12 Per the DQ; sharps containers are to be provided by the vendor. What are the sizes of sharps containers currently being used?
This was a mistake. Mines EHS provides our researchers with sharps containers.
13 Would reusable sharps containers be an acceptable solution for the labs? Or are single use sharps containers preferred?
Single use are preferred
14 Per Question 3 on page 3 of the DQ; "Has your company ever been subject to or filed any litigation, judgements, claims, arbitration proceedings, or lawsuits? If yes, provide details and state the status." Does this include various suits for non-payment?
No. We are looking for regulatory (DOT, Colorado/CDPHE) compliance issues.
15 The link on Page 19 paragraph Q "Protection of Minors Policy" is broken. Can we please get a copy of this policy?
See attached
16 How many sharps containers are currently being used by the labs?
Approximately 20
17 How many medical waste containers are currently being utilized?
18 Per section 11 there are several different types of insurance policies listed; "Protected Information", "Professional Liability Insurance", and "Crime Insurance" to be specific. Does each listed insurance type require its own policy? Or if the required coverages are met under the General Liability policy, is that acceptable?
Each insurance policies listed will be required to have its own policy.
