About this file

This document is an identification requirements notice issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers specifying credentials required for access to military installations and federal sites as of May 2025.

As of May 2025, REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses are required to enter military installations and federal sites, with the explicit exclusion that temporary driver's licenses are not acceptable. Acceptable forms of identification include U.S. passports, U.S. passport cards, U.S. Department of Defense identification cards (including dependent IDs), CAC/USID credentials, acceptable photo IDs issued by federally recognized Tribal Nations or Indian Tribes (including Enhanced Tribal Cards), HSPD-12 PIV cards/Contractor Credentials (green-striped CACs), Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC) when presented with a driver's license, U.S. Merchant Mariner Credentials, Veteran Health Identification Cards (VHIC), and Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. The document includes visual comparisons demonstrating the differences between standard driver's licenses and REAL ID-compliant licenses, noting that REAL ID compliance is required specifically for accessing military bases after October 1, 2020, boarding domestic flights after October 1, 2020, and entering federal facilities requiring identification after October 1, 2020, whereas standard licenses remain acceptable for driving, voting, and verifying identity at banks and retail stores.
