About this file

This is a military specification document (MIL-DTL-32812, DRAFT 2.1) establishing requirements for rugged, environment-resistant USB Type-C cables and connectors designated as USB-C Military (USB-CM) for Department of War use. The specification covers environmentally resistant electrical cables and connectors based on the USB Type-C specification, enhanced to operate under extreme environmental and temperature conditions required for military applications.

The specification defines four primary assembly types: Plug-to-Plug cables, Plug-to-Receptacle cables, Bulkhead receptacles, and various connector configurations including straight plugs, right-angle plugs, breakaway receptacles, and locking receptacles. Products must support multiple USB data rates (USB 2.0 through USB 4.0 Gen 3x2) and power delivery ratings from 60W to 240W. Materials specifications include thermoplastic polyurethane or elastomer jackets, corrosion-resistant steel shells, beryllium copper or corrosion-resistant steel retention springs, and silicone or fluorosilicone gaskets. All connectors must achieve a Qualified Products List (QPL) qualification before contract award, with manufacturers required to establish quality systems compliant with MIL-STD-790 and Statistical Process Control systems per SAE-EIA557. Testing requirements encompass environmental conditions (temperature shock from 130°F to -40°F, humidity, salt fog, immersion to 33 feet seawater for 10+ hours, high-altitude exposure, vibration, rain, dust, and freezing rain), electrical performance (insulation resistance ≥100 MΩ, dielectric withstanding voltage at 100 VAC), mechanical durability (10,000 mating/unmating cycles, 100-pound axial pull for extension cables, 30-pound pull for device interface cables, 10,000 flex cycles), and electromagnetic compatibility per MIL-STD-461 including ESD protection to ±8kV contact and ±15kV air discharge. The specification requires periodic 36-month requalification testing and includes detailed dimensional standards with technical drawings for male and female connector interfaces, plug configurations, and bulkhead receptacles.
