INSPECTION

A NACE Level III Certified Coatings Inspector, provided by the Contractor, shall be onsite during all phases of shop coating operations and field coating touchup operations, from surface preparation to final clean-up. Visual inspection for pinholes, holidays, dry spray, sags and other flaws shall be performed after each coat is applied.

All such flaws shall be corrected to the satisfaction of the inspector before the next coat is applied.

Inspector will evaluate cleanliness of coated surface immediately prior to application of a subsequent coat.

The final film is to be visually inspected and should be free of sags, runs, wrinkles and other excessive film build characteristics and surface defects.

APPLICATION QUALITY CONTROL

The right is reserved by Contracting Officer to invoke the following material testing procedure at any time, and any number of times during period of Shop and Filed painting:

1. Engage services of an independent testing laboratory to sample paint being used.

2. Samples of materials delivered to project site will be taken, identified and sealed, and certified in presence of NACE Inspector.

3. Testing laboratory will perform appropriate tests for any or all of following characteristics:

Abrasion resistance, apparent reflectivity, flexibility, wash ability, absorption, accelerated weathering, dry opacity, accelerated yellowness, recoating, skinning, color retention, alkali resistance and quantitative materials analysis.

4. If test results show that material being used does not comply with specified requirements, Contractor may be directed to stop painting work, and remove noncompliant paint; pay for testing; repaint surfaces coated with rejected paint; remove rejected paint from previously painted surfaces if, upon repainting with specified paint, the two (2) coatings are non compatible.

5. If requested, it will be the responsibility of the Contractor to arrange for additional inspections.

6. All parts of the work area shall be made accessible, through proper rigging, so that the independent inspector can record.

7. DFT measurements shall be taken after application of paint systems by the independent inspector using a typical apparatus such as a Mikrotest single prong gage.

B. The Contracting Officer may require, in addition to or as a substitute for the test apparatus described above, testing by the low voltage, wet sponge method.

C. All thickness readings shall be taken per SSPC PA-2.
