About this file

This is a summary of construction plans and specifications for the GAOA Mad Creek Bridge Replacement project on the Medicine Bow National Forest in Routt County, Colorado. The project involves replacing an existing timber bridge with a new prefabricated steel truss bridge spanning 84.5 feet over Mad Creek. Key requirements include mobilization; surveying; soil erosion and pollution control; removal of the existing bridge abutments and superstructure; structural excavation and backfill; placement of 145 cubic yards of class 4 riprap; geocell abutment stabilization; 21 cubic yards of crushed aggregate surfacing; 3.1 miles of roadway reconditioning; two precast concrete abutments; a prefabricated steel bridge superstructure; seeding; wood posts; and object markers. The estimated cost is $350,000. Bids for the project are due by January 15, 2023, with construction to be completed by July 31, 2023. The Forest Service will administer the contract.

SPECIFICATIONS: Construct the project in compliance with Federal Highway Administration Standard Specifications for Construction of Road and Bridges on Federal Highway Projects (FP-14) and applicable Forest Service Supplemental Specifications (FSSS).

DEWATERING & EROSION CONTROL PLAN: Submit a Dewatering and Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Plan to the Contracting Officer for approval at least seven

(7) days prior to beginning work. See Section 157 of the Supplemental Specifications for details. Construct temporary means to divert the flow of the live stream as necessary to perform work. Do not pump water from excavations directly into the live stream.

STREAM CROSSINGS: The Contractor is allowed to cross the live stream during construction with CO approval.

CONCRETE: Use Class A(AE) Concrete for Precast members. The required 28-day compressive strength (F'c) is 5,000 psi with an entrained air content of 5% ±

1%. Finish all precast elements with an ordinary surface finish. Make all concrete in accordance with an approved mix design. Chamfer all exposed edges of concrete 3/4" and fillet all acute angles 3" unless otherwise noted.

REINFORCING STEEL: Use reinforcing steel of the deformed type conforming to AASHTO M31 (ASTM A615) Grade 60. Concrete cover is as shown; where not shown it must conform to AASHTO. Cut and bend reinforcing steel in conformance with ACI 315. Lap splice bars 2' min.

DESIGN: This structure is designed for pedestrian, snow, and HL-5 loading in accordance with AASHTO "LRFD Guide Specifications for Design of

Pedestrian Bridges", 2009, and AASHTO "LRFD Bridge Design Specifications", 9th edition with current interims.

All other loads, combinations of loads, deflection criteria, etc. conforms to the

Guide Specifications for Design of Pedestrian Bridges and the USFS Handbook

7709.56b - Transportation Structures Handbook, Chapter 80 - Trail Bridge

Design.

SUBSTRUCTURE DESIGN NOTES

SUPERSTRUCTURE: The information provided in these plans and notes is intended to show the general configuration, materials, and loading requirements for the bridge superstructure. The superstructure must incorporate the elements shown in the TYPICAL SECTION on Sheet 5 and conform to the dimensions shown. Fabricate all top and bottom chords, verticals, and diagonals, from square or rectangular weathering steel tubing.

Detailed shop drawings and design calculations for the final bridge design must be submitted for review a minimum of 6 weeks prior to fabrication.

Refer to The Forest Service Supplemental Specifications, Section 571, for additional requirements.

DESIGN: The design of all prefabricated bridge superstructure elements shall comply with the AASHTO "LRFD Guide Specifications for Design of Pedestrian

Bridges", 2009, and AASHTO "LRFD Bridge Design Specifications", 9th edition, with current interims. The final design shall be prepared by a licensed professional engineer whose signed seal shall be on the design documents.

Design notes as follows:

90 psf Pedestrian Live Load

10,000 lbs. Vehicular Live Load (H5)

102 psf Ground Snow Load (Routt County Snow Load Mapper)

All other loads, combination of loads, deflection criteria, etc. shall be as specified in the Guide Specifications for Design of Pedestrian Bridges and the

USFS Handbook 7709.56b - Transportation Structures Handbook, Chapter 80 -

Trail Bridge Design.

STEEL FABRICATION: The steel bridge truss shall be fabricated by a plant with AISC-Intermediate Bridge Certification.

MATERIALS:

Steel: Use steel shapes, plates and bars of weathering steel conforming to

ASTM A588 or ASTM A242. Use hollow steel shapes of weathering steel conforming to ASTM A847 or ASTM A606 (Fy= 50,000 psi). Minimum steel thicknesses shall be as specified in the Guide Specifications for Design of

A123. All welding shall conform to the Bridge Welding Code, AWS D1.5.

Timber Decking: Furnish decking of pressure-treated Douglas-Fir Larch, No. 1 or better. Treatment to be AWPA UC4A, either oil-based or waterborne treatment as listed below:

Copper Naphthenate in hydrocarbon solvent A

Alkaline Copper Quat (formulation A, B, C, or D), Copper Azole

(formulation B or C), or Micronized copper azole (formulation C).

Alternate oil-based or waterborne products when approved equal. Field treat all cuts, bores, holes, and other alternations with 3-brush coats of Copper

Naphthenate, or AWPA M4.
