PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

Performance Description

Improved Solar Panels

Prepared by Product Manager - Expeditionary Power Systems

Marine Corps Systems Command

1. INTRODUCTION

This Performance Description (PD) establishes the required and desired levels of performance for two configurations of Improved Solar Panels (ISP) that are envisioned as product improvement insertion to existing USMC capabilities.

The USMC currently operates two renewable energy based power generation/storage systems. Both rely upon solar panels for energy collection.

The first USMC system is the Solar Power Adaptor for Communications and Electronics System (SPACES). SPACES is a light weight system that is carried in a Marine backpack during long duration foot patrols. The SPACES systems goal is to reduce total weight carried by the Marine through the reduction of batteries. The SPACES system uses two flexible, Global Solar P3-62 fold-up panels each rated at 62 watts. These solar panels are typically deployed flat due to lack of support structure. These panels are not fielded with any support structure for either deployment or transportation, other than a soft case to hold all components. The current arrangement is as depicted below. Key characteristics of this panel are:

Unfolded: 30” x 52.5” x 0.1” (762 mm x 1333 mm x 2.5 mm) Folded: 8.5” x 14.5” x 1.4” (216 mm x 368 mm x 36 mm) Weight: 3.2 lbs (1451 gm) Max Output: 62 watt (20v at 3100mA) / (40v at 1600mA) Connector: SAEJ - 2 prong

The second USMC system is the Ground Renewable Expeditionary Energy Network System (GREENS). GREENS is a vehicle transported, 900lbs, system that is used to power small patrol bases, larger weapon systems and remote transit sites. A GREENS uses a rigid, glass panel with rigid case for transport and deployment of two panels per case.

Using the transport case each panel can be angled at 30 degrees, 45 degrees or flat to improve solar energy generation. A total of 8 solar panels are connected to each GREENS system for a total solar generation capability of 1.6kW. The current arrangement is as depicted below. Improvements in the ISP-G system should be based on the panel case not just the solar panel. Key characteristics of the panel case are:

Packaged for transport: 35.5” x 66” x 9.5” Deployed footprint: 35.5” x 66” Weight: 155 lbs Rated Output: 440 Watts (2 Sanyo HIT 220A panels) Connector: ITT Canon APD High Power, APD-1BSH8-2 More information about the panel is provided in Table 1.

GREENS SPACES

The purpose of this effort is to improve upon these currently fielded capabilities with improvements in power production aerial density (watts per square foot) and power production weight density (watts per pound). More information on both USMC systems can be found at:

Item means a single hardware article or a single unit formed by a grouping of subassemblies, components, or constituent parts.

Lot or batch number means an identifying number assigned by the enterprise to a designated group of items, usually referred to as either a lot or a batch, all of which were manufactured under identical conditions.

Machine-readable means an automatic identification technology media, such as bar codes, contact memory buttons, radio frequency identification, or optical memory cards.

Original part number means a combination of numbers or letters assigned by the enterprise at item creation to a class of items with the same form, fit, function, and interface.

Parent item means the item assembly, intermediate component, or subassembly that has an embedded item with a unique item identifier or DoD recognized unique identification equivalent.

Serial number within the enterprise identifier means a combination of numbers, letters, or symbols assigned by the enterprise to an item that provides for the differentiation of that item from any other like and unlike item and is never used again within the enterprise.

Serial number within the part, lot, or batch number means a combination of numbers or letters assigned by the enterprise to an item that provides for the differentiation of that item from any other like item within a part, lot, or batch number assignment.
