1. SCOPE

1.1. Identification

This Purchase Description (PD) establishes the requirements baseline for the United States

Marine Corps (USMC) Mixed Fiber Optic Cable Assembly (MFOCA).

1.2. System Overview

The USMC MFOCA consists of a Hermaphroditic Connector (HC) plug with Expanded

Beam (EB) capability and a dielectric tactical mixed fiber optic cable (FOC) that is composed of two strands of single mode (SM) (<9/125 microns) and two strands of multi-mode (MM) (50/125 microns) fiber. The connector plugs use lenses at the fiber ends to spread light into a parallel beam up to 900 times the original active fiber area. Dust particles getting into the connector and completely blocking the beam are less of a concern in any environment because of the increased beam size in the connector. The EB technique also secures a stable optical connection in high vibration applications or where mechanical abuse of the joint is likely. The lenses are treated with a hard anti-reflective coating which optimizes optical performance, ensures durability, and reduces back reflection. Lens integrity is guaranteed through a no-contact connection. These lenses protect the fiber ends from dust/dirt particles and fracture by direct contact. The fiber ends are safely behind the hardened lenses within the connector assembly.

The USMC MFOCA meets the ever increasing requirement for SM fiber connectivity between Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) based data systems. The USMC MFOCA also meets the need for MM connectivity between communications hubs, such as the Digital

Technical Control (DTC) AN/TSQ-227A facility, and transmission media, such as a satellite terminal or line of sight radio sets. HC-EB connector plugs can support multi-strand cables. A connector lens layout has been selected that will allow the same cable to be connected to existing USMC tactical systems with HC-EB signal entry panel bulkhead receptacles, whether SM or MM. This USMC MFOCA would eliminate the need for two distinctly different cables, simplifying the USMC FOC inventory and reducing the logistics footprint for deployment. The USMC MFOCA would eliminate the need to identify cable composition because it would be universal.

HC-EB has been engineered into the Service Life Extension Program for the DTC. It is also presently being utilized in the Transition Switch Module (TSM), Data Distribution

System- Modular (DDS-M) Communications Security Module (CSM), AN/GSQ-274A, Joint Enhanced Core Communications System (JECCS) AN/TSQ-231A, Phoenix Tactical

SHF Satellite Terminal (TSST) AN/TSC-156C, and the Lightweight Multi-Band Satellite

Terminal (LMST) AN/USC-65(V) programs.

1.3. System Definition

Throughout this Purchase Description, a cable assembly refers to a fiber optic cable with connector plugs on each end. A fiber optic cable refers to the fiber optic cable only. A connector plug refers to the connector plug only.

1.4. Maintenance Concept

The USMC MFOCA will be supported with a two-level maintenance concept

Operator/Crew (O/C) and Field in accordance with current Marine Corps maintenance policy, Marine Corps Order P4790.1.

The Operator/Crew will perform expedient “Tactical” repair using a pigtail. A pigtail has one end connectorized. The other end has four open fiber strands to be prepared for use in a Fusion Splicer. This allows an expedient “temporary” repair to the damaged four strand fiber cable, in the field.

The Field level will install a permanent repair in garrison, to return the damaged cable to

Condition Code A, serviceable and issuable to all customers without limitation or restriction, where the materiel has more than 6 months shelf-life remaining.

1.5. Purchase Description Naming Conventions

Throughout this Purchase Description, USMC MFOCA refers to a four strand fiber optic cable assembly consisting of two (2) SM (<9/125) fiber strands and two (2) MM (50/125) fiber strands and connector plugs. Single mode only fiber optic cable assembly refers to a two (2) strand fiber optic cable consisting of two (2) SM (<9/125) fiber strands and connector plugs supporting the same on each end. Multimode only fiber optic cable assembly refers to a two (2) strand fiber optic cable consisting of two (2) MM (50/125) fiber strands and connector plugs supporting the same on each end.
