QUESTIONS/RESPONSES

Question: APU starting Functionality sec 3.4.10.2

To meet this requirement will 12VDC be available from the vehicle 24 VDC battery source for starter and other 12 VDC use?

Government Response:

In accordance with Requirement 3.4.10.2, "APU shall draw current from MTVR vehicle batteries for startup during mounted operation". The vehicle batteries are connected in series and the vehicle architecture is 28VDC and thus a 12VDC source is not available in the mounted configuration. So in the mounted configuration, the APU will need provisions to start using a 28VDC source. For dismounted operation, in accordance with Requirement 3.4.10.2, the APU shall be capable of starting using a Government-supplied 12VDC battery. In conclusion, the APU should have provisions to start using a 12VDC AND 28VDC source. The 28VDC is only used when APU is mounted on the vehicle, the 12VDC source is only used when APU is operating off the vehicle.
