“I WAS AN OGRE ON THE DRILL FIELD and in the huts of Montford. . . but I was fair.”

“Hashmark” Johnson became the first black drill instructor for the Montford Point Marines. Like drill instructors at Parris Island or San Diego, his fierce demeanor scared his recruits, but he also gave them the motivation needed to become combat Marines.

Drill instructors everywhere conducted “Junk on the Bunk” inspections to instill greater discipline into their recruits. In a stressful procedure familiar to all Marines, the recruits struggled to display their clothing and equipment_cleaned, labeled, serviceable_in exact compliance with

Wake Island Flag This U.S. flag flew during the last days of the defense of Wake Island. With the surrender of American forces, it was captured by Lieutenant Commander Taro Fukatso of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Upon his return to Japan in the spring of 1943, he gave the flag to his mother.

Fukatso was killed on 25 October 1944, during the battle of Leyte Gulf. The flag was returned to the Marine Corps in 1956.

C

CNC:

A CNCwood router is a numerical control tool that creates objects from wood. Parts of a project can be designed in the computer with a CAD/CAM pro-gram, and then cut automatically using a router to produce a finished part.

The CNC router works like a printer. Work is com-posed on a computer and then the design or draw-ing is sent to the CNC router for the hard copy. This outputs a 3-dimensional copy of the work. The CNC router uses a cutting tool instead of an ink jet. The cutting tool is generally a router but other cutters can be used as well.

DuraTrans:

Duratrans is a short term for Durable Transpar-ency and is a brand name of Kodak. Very often it is used as a generic term for backlit display prints.

While Duratrans may refer to a specific photograph-ic process and product, it has also become a general reference to any backlit imagery whether produced photographically or by other digital process such as ink jet printing.

MDF:

Medium Density Fiberboard.

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is more dense than plywood.
