About this file

This is a riparian buffer plan document for a tree planting project administered by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The project involves planting approximately 4,900 bare-root tree and shrub seedlings across 25.2 acres at the Lyndhurst Ponds Natural Area Preserve in Augusta County along the South River. The seedlings will be planted on a 15-foot by 15-foot grid at a density of 200 trees per acre during the fall 2026 planting season. Site preparation and installation will be performed by a contractor to be determined (TDB). The associated state and local contract opportunity requests tree planting labor and post-planting establishment services, with all inquiries required to be submitted via email by 2:00 PM on November 5, 2026. The contract term includes two consecutive years of post-planting services consisting of competition control and high-clearance row mowing.

The plan specifies that bird nets may be removed during the first three years if seedlings grow through or near the top of their protective tubes to prevent tree deformation. The project point of contact is Felicity Zimmerman at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (fzimmerman@cbf.org), with project implementation led by Tyler Urgo, Shenandoah Valley Region Steward for DCR (tyler.urgo@dcr.virginia.gov). No pricing information, set-asides, incumbent contractor details, or specific funding amounts are detailed in the provided documentation.

In the first three years, the landowner can take off bird nets if seedlings are growing through the top of the tube (or are close to the top of the tube). This will prevent the tree from getting tangled in the net and becoming deformed.
