About this file
This is a Riparian Buffer Proposed Plan document for a tree planting project administered by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). The project involves the precise planting of approximately 4,900 bare-root tree and shrub seedlings across 25.2 acres at the Lyndhurst Ponds Natural Area Preserve in Augusta County along the South River. Seedlings will be planted on a 15-foot by 15-foot grid at a density of 200 trees per acre during the fall 2026 planting season. The related contract opportunity (DCR/NH Tree Planting & Post Planting Establishment Services) requires a qualified contractor to provide tree planting labor and subsequent post-planting establishment services, including two consecutive years of competition control and high-clearance row mowing. All questions regarding the contract must be submitted via email to the project contact by 2:00 PM on October 23, 2026.
The project plan specifies that bare-root seedlings will be used and that site preparation and installation will be determined (TDB). The plan was completed by Felicity Zimmerman of CBF, with project oversight provided by Tyler Urgo, Shenandoah Valley Region Steward for DCR. Post-planting management guidelines indicate that bird nets protecting seedlings may be removed during the first three years once seedlings grow through or near the top of protective tubes to prevent tree deformation. The project adheres to Virginia's invasive plant management standards as referenced in DCR's Natural Heritage invasive plant list documentation.

In the first three years, the landowner can take off bird nets if seedlings are growing through the top of the tube (or are close to the top of the tube). This will prevent the tree from getting tangled in the net and becoming deformed.
