About this file
The document is a Request for Information (RFI) issued by the City of Pasadena Water & Power Department, seeking insights into Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies. The RFI aims to gather information from industry experts, academia, research laboratories, and government agencies about LDES systems with at least 10 hours of storage capacity, specifically focusing on technologies commercially available between 2027-2030. Responses are due by December 31, 2024, at 2:00 pm through the city's eProcurement Portal, with a question submission deadline of December 20, 2024. The proposed site is a 7-acre decommissioned steam plant scheduled for demolition, and the city is interested in understanding the capabilities and potential deployment of LDES technologies at this location.
The RFI covers comprehensive technical and operational details, including technology readiness levels, safety measures, reliability, availability, product specifications, pricing structures, and potential grant opportunities. Respondents are asked to provide information on power ratings, energy storage capacity, round-trip efficiency, cycling limitations, degradation rates, and site requirements. The city is particularly interested in environmental agency restrictions, supply chain vulnerabilities, and end-of-life disposal plans. Importantly, this RFI is purely for informational and planning purposes, and participation will not impact future procurement considerations. The document emphasizes that no contract will be awarded through this process, but the information collected will help the City of Pasadena develop its strategy for achieving carbon-free electricity.

Long Duration Energy Storage
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
Monday, October 7, 2024
City of Pasadena Water & Power Department, Power Supply

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI)
Introduction
Summary
The City of Pasadena (City) is striving towards achieving carbon-free electricity and recognizes the importance of innovative energy solutions in this endeavor. Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) system, which offers at least 10 hours of storage capacity, are becoming increasingly important in enhancing grid reliability and integrating renewable energy sources. This Request for Information (RFI) aims to gather insights from a broad range of stakeholders – including industry experts, academia, research laboratories, and government agencies – about existing and evolving LDES technologies. The information collected will support the City in understanding the current landscape and potential advancements in this field.
Participation in this RFI will not positively or negatively impact the City’s consideration of any future procurements related to this effort. Information submitted in response to this RFI is considered public information.
Background
As the City works to achieve its goal of carbon-free electricity, understanding the role of the LDES systems is essential. LDES technologies are critical for enhancing grid reliability and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources by providing power during non-solar hours. The proposed site for future LDES development is a decommissioned steam plant covering approximately 7 acres, which is scheduled for demolition in the coming years. The City is particularly focused on identifying LDES solutions that could be commercially available in the 2027-2030 timeframe and evaluating how much of these technologies can be accommodated within the designated site. While we are focused on information about emerging technologies during those years, we are also interested in insights into solutions that may be available after this timeframe.
