About this file
The document is a Request for Information (RFI) matrix issued by the City of Pasadena, California, seeking information on Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies. The RFI aims to gather comprehensive insights from industry experts, academia, research laboratories, and government agencies about existing and emerging LDES technologies, with a focus on systems offering at least 10 hours of storage capacity. The city is specifically interested in technologies that can support its goal of achieving carbon-free electricity, and is requesting detailed technical metrics including power capacity, storage length, energy capacity, operational life, degradation rates, round-trip efficiency, safety characteristics, and deployment considerations.
The RFI matrix provides a flexible template for respondents to share technical and economic details about their LDES technologies, with example metrics covering lithium-ion technologies. Key cost considerations include unit pricing, shipping costs to California, installation expenses, and annual maintenance fees. The document emphasizes that participation will not impact future procurement decisions and that submitted information will be considered public. Technology readiness levels, intended use cases (such as utility-scale, commercial, residential, and microgrid applications), and supply chain security are also highlighted as important evaluation criteria. The City of Pasadena's approach demonstrates a strategic effort to understand the current LDES technology landscape and potential advancements in renewable energy storage solutions.

Instructions Thank you for considering responding to Pasadena's Request for Information on Long-Duration Energy Storage Technologies.
This document allows for a different format of submitting information to the RFI instead of the written responses in the RFI template. We are interested in seeing as much data as possible about as wide a range of technologies as possible. So if you have partial information or if you would like to change the matrix to include more metrics please do so. You may answer with only numbers or you may submit full paragraphs, both formats are acceptable for this document.
LDES Technology Metrics
| LDES Technology Metrics | ||||||
| Example Product | Product Name 1 | Product Name 2 | Technology 1 | Technology 2 | ||
| Technical | ||||||
| Type of Tech | Lithium-ion | |||||
| Please state what technology category your technology would fall under. Common categories include: electrochemical, mechanical, electrical, and chemical | ||||||
| Power Capacity (MW) | 5 | |||||
| Length of Storage (hours) | 10 | |||||
| Energy Capacity (MWh) | 50 | |||||
| Size of one unit (length x width x height) [feet, inches] | 40 ft x 10 ft x 8 ft | |||||
| Operational Life (years) | 20 | |||||
| Degradation Rate (per year) | ||||||
| Degradation is the rate at which the MW capacity discharge amount decreases each year from normal usage | 5% | |||||
| Round Trip Efficiency AC (%) | 95% | |||||
| Maximum Allowed Cycles per Day (one full charge and one full discharge is a cycle) | 1 cycle/day | |||||
| Augmentation Schedule (If required) | Roughly every 5 years, replacing 1/3 of the cells | |||||
| Augmentation is the act of adding or replacing individual cells to maintain a certain level of MW capacity. | ||||||
| Safety | ||||||
| Fire Danger Level and Required Safety Measures | Lithium-ion has a significant fire danger from thermal runaway, it is crucial that the batteries are kept cool and separated by air from other batteries to prevent the spread of fire if one were to occur. | |||||
| Earthquake/Sesmic Rating | Standard earthquake use for the unit container, the batteries themselves should suffer no damager from smaller earthquakes. The equipment is sesimic certified per requirements for the International Building Code. | |||||
| Toxicity | The chemicals making up the battery are toxic and corrosive, so avoiding any spills is crucial. | |||||
| Radioactivity | No Radioactivity | |||||
| Population Proximity Limitation | Due to the potential fire danger, these units need to have space around them devoid of material to prevent the battery from retaining heat, and to prevent the spread of fire . There are no specific restrictions from population proximity with proper fire preventation measures. | |||||
| Deployment | ||||||
| Supply Chain Security | Changing supply chains as the domestic (NA) production lines are increasing in scale, while chinese imports continue to decrease in price. | |||||
| Does your product have any vulerabilities when importing from other countries, does it have rare materials that can impact production, etc.) | ||||||
| Technology Readiness Level (TRL) | 9 | |||||
| Adoption Readiness Level (ARL) | 9 | |||||
| Intended Use Cases | Utility-scale, commercial, residential, back-up power, microgrid, voltage regulation, etc. | |||||
| Common use cases for energy storage include: Utility-scale, Commercial-scale, residential-scale, transportation, voltage regulation, backup power, microgrid, etc. | ||||||
| Costs | ||||||
| Cost Per Unit ($) | $XX,XXX | |||||
| Cost of Shipping (based on shipping to California) | $XX,XXX,XXX | |||||
| Cost for Installation ($) | $X million | |||||
| Cost for Maintenance ($ per year) | $XX,XXX per year, $XXX,XXX if augmentation is needed. |
