About this file

This document describes notional packaging concepts for the Landsat Next Instrument Suite (LandIS) satellite payload. It considers two approaches: radially clocked and blocked stacked configurations for the LandIS instruments - a LandIS volume of approximately 1.35m x 1.95m x 1.5m is assumed. Minimum clearances between instrument envelopes and selection of the Atlas V fairing for assessment due to its availability in the Kennedy Space Center Launch Services Program catalog are also noted. Appendices provide drawings of fairings for the Atlas V, Falcon 9, and New Glenn launch vehicles to facilitate packaging trade studies. The related opportunity notice establishes an eLibrary location for reference documents pertaining to the LandIS instruments to support proposal efforts for its development and launch.

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this document is to describe notional Landsat Next fairing packaging concepts.

1.2 Assumptions

1.2.1 LandIS volume

For this assessment, the LandIS instrument volume is estimated to be 1.35m W x 1.95m L x 1.5m H.

1.2.2 LandiS Envelope Clearance

A minimum clarence between envelopes is established as .24m (8 inches)

1.2.3 Faring selection

The Atlas V fairing was chosen since it is the smallest available in the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Services Program (LSP) Catalogue at the time they were generated. Drawings from the available user’s guides can be found in the appendices.
