About this file
This document presents two notional packaging concepts for the Landsat Next Instrument Suite (LandIS) on potential launch vehicles. The concepts include radially clocked and blocked stacked configurations for housing the LandIS instruments within available fairing volumes. The LandIS instrument is estimated to measure 1.35m by 1.95m by 1.5m. Both concepts aim to provide a minimum 0.24m clearance between instrument envelopes. The blocked stacked concept arranges the instruments in stacked layers while the radially clocked concept distributes them around the perimeter. Appendices include drawings of fairing envelopes for the SpaceX Falcon 9, ULA Atlas V, and Blue Origin New Glenn launch vehicles, which were evaluated for payload accommodation. Also described is a related federal contract opportunity notice for an eLibrary to host LandIS reference documentation.

1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to describe notional Landsat Next fairing packaging concepts.
1.2 Assumptions
1.2.1 LandIS volume
For this assessment, the LandIS instrument volume is estimated to be 1.35m W x 1.95m L x 1.5m H.
1.2.2 LandiS Envelope Clearance
A minimum clarence between envelopes is established as .24m (8 inches)
1.2.3 Faring selection
The Atlas V fairing was chosen since it is the smallest available in the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Services Program (LSP) Catalogue at the time they were generated. Drawings from the available user’s guides can be found in the appendices.
Table 1: Faring Diameters of Launch Vehicles in the LSP Catalogue.
Fairing Minimum interior Diameter* (mm) SpaceX Falcon 9 4572.5011
Blue Origin New Glenn 6228 ULA Vulcan** Assumed same as Atlas V ULA Atlas V 4572
*Diameter is above the theoretical payload attachment (PAF) interface ** ULA Vulcan User’s Guide is not yet available at the time of this document’s release.
