About this file
This document outlines the technical requirements for the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) GPS-Acoustic (GPS-A) instrument modification and purchase of vessel-based transceivers to support seafloor geodetic measurements in water depths up to 6000 meters. The key requirements include integrating the GPS-A payload with a Sonardyne SV3 Wave Glider, operating in the 14-19 kHz acoustic frequency range, compatibility with Sonardyne 6G products and WideBand 2+ protocol, and having an integrated acoustic modem. The vessel-based transceivers must be portable, deployable over the side, and able to retrieve data or configure logging of Sonardyne AMT and Fetch transponders, as well as release Sonardyne Fetch transponder acoustic releases, operating in the 14-34 kHz frequency range.
The USGS intends to award a purchase order to Sonardyne, Inc. for the required LMF Acoustic Communication Module (ACM) with LMF Transducer, and a Medium Frequency (MF) Dunker 6 System Kit, citing Sonardyne's compatibility with existing USGS-owned equipment as the basis for a sole-source award. The notice invites any responsible parties to submit a quotation by April 4, 2024, which the agency will consider, though a determination not to compete the action is at the sole discretion of the government.

USGS Deep Water Acoustic Equipment Technical Requirements
Seafloor GPS-Acoustic (GPS-A) measurements are required to measure most accurately the deformation leading up to and including subduction zone earthquakes that represent significant hazard to the United States.
The USGS has begun a program of placing instruments on the seafloor to make new measurements in hazardous subduction zones such as offshore Oregon and Washington and Alaska. The program has a need to make seafloor geodetic measurements at subduction zone deformation fronts in the deepest part of subduction zones. To address this need we are seeking to modify our existing Sonardyne GPS-A instrument and purchase vessel-based transceivers to communicate with seafloor transponders in up to 6000m water depth.
Specific technical requirements are:
GPS-A instrument modification
· Integration with the Sonardyne GPS-A payload for an SV3 Wave glider.
· Acoustic frequency range 14-19kHz
· Capable of communicating with Sonardyne 6G products
· Fully compatible with Sonardyne WideBand 2+ protocol
· Integrated acoustic modem.
Vessel-based transceivers
· Portable and vessel deployable over the side.
· Deck interface unit
· Able to retrieve data or configure logging of Sonardyne AMT and Fetch transponders.
· Capable to release Sonardyne Fetch transponder acoustic releases.
· Acoustic frequency range 14-34kHz
