About this file

This technical specification document details the requirements for a Cobalt-60 gamma irradiator for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division. The specifications include a minimum of 8000 Ci Cobalt-60 with a variable dose rate of at least 5 x 10^5 R/hr, a chamber minimum of 10" wide x 10" high x 40" long, and a total footprint not exceeding 48" wide x 168" x 96" long. The device must weigh no more than 15,000 pounds and operate on 115 Volts, 60 Hz at 5 amps.

Critical safety features include electro-mechanical interlocks to prevent accidental exposure, automatic source return to a fully shielded position during power failures or pneumatic pressure loss, and external radiation levels not exceeding 5 mR/hr at 12" from the surface. Additional requirements include motorized door openers, access ports for instrument wires/fluid piping, pneumatically driven irradiation control, and the possibility of on-site reloading. The document is dated May 16, 2025, prepared under DOE Contract Number DE-AC05-00OR22725 between the US Department of Energy and UT-Battelle LLC.
