About this file

This is a pre-proposal presentation document prepared by the Maryland Department of Health, Center for Cancer Prevention and Control (PHPA), outlining the Firefighters Innovative Testing Program (SFY26). The program intends to provide multiple grants to local fire departments and volunteer fire companies to procure innovative cancer screening technologies and tests not typically covered during routine physical examinations or by insurance. The initiative supports professional and volunteer firefighters in accordance with Maryland Health General Article sections 13-4001 through 13-4007. The presentation covers program objectives, eligible screening technologies, application requirements, and implementation timelines for interested fire departments and companies seeking to participate in this grant-funded initiative.

The program represents Maryland's commitment to addressing cancer prevention and screening disparities within the firefighter population through innovative testing methods. Eligible applicants include both professional and volunteer fire departments operating within Maryland. The grants are designed to fund procurement of advanced screening technologies that extend beyond standard occupational health examinations, with funding provided through the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control. The presentation materials outline the evaluation criteria, selection process, and technical requirements for proposed screening programs, establishing a framework for fire departments to submit applications and demonstrate how innovative cancer screening would benefit their personnel and contribute to improved health outcomes within the firefighting profession.
