b. Clear woody vegetation along entire fenceline (8’ swath)

c. Grading along the fence line is not required. In general, the fence shall be erected on the undisturbed, natural ground. The style of fence construction including the post spacing shall be as shown on the drawings.

d. New Fencing is to be constructed of standard, wildlife-friendly 4 strand barbed wire, t-posts and steel pipe double H braces

CLEARING AND GRUBBING

Live pines (lodgepole and ponderosa) and spruce if in abundance. These guidelines do not pertain to aspen, Douglas-fir, or subalpine fir).

1. In areas of abundant tree growth, all lopped slash greater than 3 inches in diameter should be cut to two-foot lengths and scattered in areas of maximum sunlight to promote drying.

2. In the event that cut trees are kept for later administrative use: older dead trees (one year after the tree has died) can be safely stored or used in susceptible sites because the living tissue under the outer bark has dried sufficiently and is not attractive to the insect.

3. Stumps along the fenceline must be cut less than 6 inches.

4. A 8 -foot corridor on the wire side of the fence and 4 ft corridor on the other side will be cleared.

5. A wood cutting permit must be obtained if wood is removed for personal use (see Forest Products Removal Permit conditions form FS-2400-1).

FIELD WELDING

1. Use materials and methods that minimize distortion and develop strength and corrosion resistance of base metals.

2. Obtain fusion without undercut or overlap.

3. Remove welding flux immediately.

4. At exposed connections, finish exposed welds and surfaces smooth and blended so no roughness shows after finishing and contour of welded surface matches that of adjacent surface.

5. Welded connections shall be made by certified welders in accordance with AWS B1.1 structural welding code. All connections shall be made by minimum 3/16” continuous fillet welds.

6. The exclosures shall be fabricated in accordance with the dimensions and details shown on the drawings. Ends of pipe members shall be coped to approximately fit and welded, using a continuous fillet weld. All exposed pipe ends shall be ground smooth.

7. Post shall be erected plumb and at the desired elevation. Posts shall be pounded into the ground to the depths indicated on the drawings.

8. The Contractor will be required to cut all pipes to correct lengths specified on the drawings.

Saddles shall be cut into pipe to ensure snug fit between top-rail and posts and H-braces and posts.

9. Welding must be pre-approved by the District Ranger before construction begins

10. Weld in the spring or with sufficient soil moisture to reduce chance of fire (fire restriction may inhibit construction beginning in late July or August and may require the following:

welding only with winds less than 10 mph, provide fire extinguisher, shovel, and an additional person to watch for sparks, provide 50 gallons of water and pump to distinguish sparks as needed).
