About this file

This document is a Piano Adventures Technique & Artistry Accelerated Book for Older Beginners by Nancy and Randall Faber. The book is designed to teach piano technique through a structured approach with two main parts: Technique Secrets Part One and Part Two. Each part introduces specific piano skills through exercises and musical pieces.

The book contains 15 units covering various technical skills including firm fingertips, arm weight, light thumb techniques, slur gestures, and connected pedaling. Each unit includes musical exercises with thematic titles like "Paris Taxi Ride" and "Around the Art Museum" that help students practice specific techniques. The book also includes reference sections for major and minor chords and provides a progressive learning method with "Artistry Magic" pieces to develop expressive performance skills. The design allows students to track their progress by marking completion dates for each piece and includes a certificate at the end of the book.

A Note to Teacher and Student

The Piano Adventures" Technique &: Artistry books combine two essential elements of pianism: techni cal skill and artistic perfonnance. This integrated approach builds basic elements of piano technique, always directed toward an artistic goal.

Piano Adventures Technique &: Artistry is organized into units that correspond with those of the Lesson book. The correlating Lesson book pages are indicated in the lower right margins.

Although this book is designed to be used with the Accelerated Piano Adventures Lesson Book, the Technique &: Artistry series can be used effectively with any method.

The Piano Adventures Technique &: Artistry books feature preparatory exercises called "technique secrets." These "secrets" are used as daily wann-ups for the exercises and pieces throughout the book.

In this book for the older beginner, four secrets are presented at the beginning of the book (pp. 4-5) and a second set of secrets in the middle of the book (pp. 36-37). These elegantly simple exercises develop a technical foundation, training the student in the following:

Part 1 (p. 4) Part 2 (p. 36)

• Firm fingertips • Arm weight

• Light thumb • Slur gesture

• Wrist float-off • Light thumb

• Fast lingers • Connected pedaling

Expressive playing is explored at the end of each unit in an "Artistry Magic" piece. The teacher may find many of these useful for recitals and festivals.

The integration of technique and artistry in this course gives students the tools for expressive perfonnance.

We are confident you will enjoy your students' progress as they build a technical foundation with the purpose of artistic playing!

L~ :~1 TECHNIQUE SECRETS - Part Two

These four technique secrets are used as wann-ups for the second part of the book.

Four Technique Secrets

5. The first secret is ARM WEIGHT.

Exercise: Heavy Arms

• Sit tall and let your anns hang completely relaxed at your sides. Feel the weight of your anns.

• Keeping the natural curve of your hands, slowly lift your "heavy anns."

• When your anns reach the height of the keyboard, let them drop completely relaxed into your lap.

Repeat 2 more times. □

6. The second secret is a SLUR GESTURE.

Exercise: Painter's Brush Stroke -x.w A pianist can play several notes with a single motion.

This smooth wrist motion is called a slur gesture.

As you play, imagine the smooth brush stroke of a painter.

Your wrist will rise slightly through the slur.

• Play this R.H. slur gesture R.H.

in IDGHER octaves.
