Specification: The requirement is for engineering 3D in vitro models of the RPE/Choroidal interface using a thin poly(lactide-co-glycolide) membrane as a structural support. As the membrane is delicate, and is used as the bioprinting surface, a non-contact means of determining the membrane height in the bioprinter is necessary to complete a successful print. The bioprinter will feature a substrate height calibration unit that will detect the membranes and position bioink printheads at heights appropriate for depositing printed structures on top of the membranes. The modular print heads can deposit multiple bioink formulations sequentially, and the print heads and substrate stages are temperature controlled.
The printer is sensitive to dust and contaminants, so it is necessary to house the printer in a biosafety cabinet (BSC).
The BSC will be dimensions 2355 mm tall x 1030 mm deep x 1370 mm wide and will house the 670 mm tall by 700 mm deep x 595 mm wide bioprinter. The bioprinter will not be used in conjunction with other BSCs in the room, and it will not be used for routine cell culture tasks.
The bioprinter will come with its own control unit PC and computer-aided design software package. These will allow users to directly control the bioprinter during a printing session and program automated bioprinting protocols to executed by the machine. The computer will be located next to the BSC and will be using the latest version of Windows as an operating system.
