About this file

This document is a geotechnical exploration report prepared by Ardaman & Associates, Inc. for the Canaveral Port Authority, focusing on the proposed Cruise Terminal No. 5 located on the north side of the West Turning Basin at Port Canaveral, Florida. The investigation was conducted in May and June 1986 and involved a subsurface exploration program to support the design and construction of the terminal, including pier and bulkhead areas. The study included reviewing previous boring data, performing Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings, conducting laboratory testing, and analyzing soil samples to determine engineering properties and classifications.

The exploration program consisted of multiple boring locations (THQ-1, THQ-14, TH-3, and others) ranging from 98 to 111 feet deep, with borings located near the proposed bulkhead and dredging areas. Soil classifications revealed predominantly gray to brown fine sand with varying compositions, including silty fine sand, clayey fine sand, and shell fragments. The borings encountered different soil layers with varying consistency and composition, with elevation measurements referenced to Mean Low Water (MLW). The project aims to dredge the basin to -35 feet MLW to accommodate cruise ships, with a proposed 3.0H:1.0V slope design along the bulkhead to protect against erosion and prop-wash. The geotechnical report provides critical information for engineering design and construction planning of the marine infrastructure.

APPENDIX B – SOIL BORING LOGS

1. Source for soil borings: Ardaman & Associates, Inc., Orlando, Florida. These boring logs are for Contractor information only and do not form a part of the Contract Documents. There is no guarantee implied or expressed that the material shown is the material that will be encountered.

2. Locations of borings are shown herein.

3. Depths are in feet and tenths of feet and are reference to existing ground or pier deck surface as indicated on the boring logs.

4. Blows/0.5 ft. refers to the number of hammer blows required to advance a 2-foot sample (2” I.D. X 2-1/2” O.D.) six inches.

5. (SC), (CH) and (SP) refer to the Unified Soils Classification System (USCS).

Materials shown on the core logs have been classified on the basis of field visual examination. Laboratory classifications are based on laboratory testing and take precedence over visual field classification.

6. No core samples are available for inspection.

7. Original Ardaman field logs may be available for inspection at the Orlando office of Ardaman & Associates, Inc.
