About this file
The document is a geotechnical exploration report by Ardaman & Associates, Inc. for the Canaveral Port Authority, focusing on soil boring logs for the Proposed Cruise Terminal No. 5 on the North Side of the West Turning Basin at Port Canaveral, Florida. The report details a subsurface exploration program conducted in June 1989, which involved performing Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings and auger borings in the proposed terminal area, with borings ranging from 98 to 111 feet in total depth. The exploration was authorized by Captain Joseph Lapolla and aimed to investigate soil conditions for potential pier and bulkhead construction, with borings located along the north wall of the West Turning Basin.
The soil investigation revealed a complex geological profile consisting primarily of various layers of fine sand, including brown and gray variants with shell fragments, silty fine sand, and clayey fine sand. The soil classifications, using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), included SP (poorly graded sand), SM (silty sand), SC (clayey sand), and CH (high plasticity clay). Laboratory testing was conducted to determine natural moisture content, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, and unconfined compressive strength. The report emphasizes that these boring logs are for contractor information only, with no guarantee implied about the exact material that will be encountered during actual construction, and that laboratory classifications take precedence over field visual classifications.

3. Depths are in feet and tenths of feet and are reference to existing ground or pier deck surface as indicated on the boring logs.
4. Blows/0.5 ft. refers to the number of hammer blows required to advance a 2-foot sample (2” I.D. X 2-1/2” O.D.) six inches.
5. (SC), (CH) and (SP) refer to the Unified Soils Classification System (USCS).
Materials shown on the core logs have been classified on the basis of field visual examination. Laboratory classifications are based on laboratory testing and take precedence over visual field classification.
