The OneSAF Origin Story
▶ 1996 DUSA-OR directed an AMSAA-led Army wide CGF/SAF study
▶ Problem Description:
• Multiple, duplicative tools executing similar mission
• Substantial costs to replicate the same systems, units, terrain databases
• Little synergy between simulations/efforts
▶ Task:
• Assess which CGFs have the potential to satisfy different Modeling and Simulation (M&S) community applications to develop an optimum investment strategy
▶ Result:
• No current CGF capable of satisfying the requirement
▶ Recommendation(s): 7
• 1 through 6: How to manage the short term (1-5 yrs)
• 7: Develop a new common CGF architecture
Recommendation 7 led to a formal Mission Need Statement (MNS) in 1997

OneSAF Requirements Process
Requirements Process Works
CAA collects CO rqmt’s/use cases and forwards to TPO OneSAF
TPO OneSAF provides consolidated list of all Communities requirements to CAA
Each Communities prioritizes their top 10 version x.x requirements and provide back to TPO OneSAF
CAA forwards request to
M&S Community Organizations (CO)
CO determines:
- New requirements
- Generates use cases for new rqmt’s
TPO OneSAF convenes
Requirements Integration Board (RIB)
- RIB generates integrated prioritized list
- Forwards to Pd OneSAF to develop
ROMs
TPO convenes Requirements Prioritization
Board (RPB) Council of Colonels meeting
- RPB approves final requirements list
TPO forwards approved list to Pd OneSAF
Process: Per AR 350-52. TPO performs as the Army’s centralized planner, manager, and cross-domain integrator for all OneSAF requirements, from the communities and routes them, in order, to:
1. Requirements Integration Board (RIB):
• Working Level delegates of TPO / Communities, and non-voting stakeholders.
• Perform initial review and integration of requirements into draft
Prioritized Requirements List (PRL).
2. TPO OneSAF provides PRL to Pd OneSAF
• PM OneSAF provides “ROM” based on programmed funding.
• This process, coupled with co-developer code and PTR Fixes determines the capabilities in the next version.
3. Requirements Prioritization Board (RPB):
• Voting level Community delegates
• Chaired by TPO OneSAF.
• Recommend Army-wide requirements for OneSAF improvements
• Finalize the Prioritized Requirements List (PRL).

OneSAF Capabilities
Description: One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF) is an entity based Open Source (software only, platform independent) composable Computer Generated Forces (CGF) simulation and tool suite designed to represent brigade and below, combat and non-combat operations. OneSAF’s physics based models use validated data representing a full range of doctrinally correct operations, systems and control processes in support of simulation applications across the Army M&S communities:
Acquisition, Analysis, Experimentation, Intelligence, Test & Evaluation, and Training – and Army Futures
Command (AFC) CFT analysis efforts. OneSAF and all OneSAF tools are Government owned (GOTS).
OneSAF models real-world representations of platforms, Soldiers, equipment, logistical supplies, communications systems and networks, emerging threats, and aviation assets to achieve the level of fidelity required for a particular application or scenario.
Capabilities:
• Cloud enabled, limited MDO support
• Simulation agnostic GOTS tool kit elements

• Bifrost optimizes network usage to work efficiently on Army networks, cloud deployments, and long-haul exercises
– Bifrost does not rely on multicast, to simplify deployment in commercial or private cloud environments
• Bifrost is scalable to more than 4 million entities over a global environment
• Bifrost lowers the barrier of entry, making it easier to incorporate simulations or components (e.g., satellite feeds, commercial air tracks)
• Bifrost’s web user interface can control multiple sources of simulated entities – single user interface across multiple simulations
• Uses OneSAF server cluster to provide large scale entity and aggregated view/control
Bifrost Framework (cont.)
• Establishing Bifrost for large scale distributed simulations
• Utilize Bifrost in the OneSAF IDE Lab for the biweekly Large Scale Distributed
Testing (LSDT)
• Integrating Mission Command Adapter/COBWebS into Bifrost in support of

▶ Government Open Source:
OneSAF code is available to the US Government and its allies and is distributed by the program office with a signed Distribution Agreement
(DA) domestically and to its allies through approved agreements.
▶ Development Reuse:

▶ All Users Benefit:
More robust software, more capability, larger entity count, and more management tools result from cross-community use.
▶ Highly Configurable:
OneSAF’s sophisticated architecture handles increased complexity while allowing users to configure it for their specific needs.
