SAW CUTS
This work shall be performed in accordance with the applicable portions of Section 442 of the Standard Specification and as detailed in the plans and as directed by the Engineer and as modified by this special provision. Saw cutting shall consist of sawing existing pavements, driveways, concrete curb and gutters, and as directed by the Engineer, to a full-depth so as when the existing pavement or curb is removed, a clean and neat vertical edge will result with no spalling of the surface intended to remain. Full depth saw cutting shall be performed to establish a straight and true edge at existing driveways where the proposed shoulder work is to cross asphalt or concrete driveways. This work shall not be measured and paid for separately and shall be considered incidental to EXCAVATING & GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER.
In addition to saw cuts at the driveways, the Contractor shall perform full-depth saw cuts at each trench edge for pipe culverts scheduled for replacement. Pavement cores within the project limits indicate that existing pavement thickness varies from 2.5" to 6" with 3" being the average of all cores taken. The Contractor shall be required to provide clean and neat vertical edges such that no spalling of the existing pavement structure will occur during the excavation of the trench. This work shall not be measured and paid for separately and shall be considered incidental to CLASS D PATCH of the type and thickness specified.
TRENCH BACKFILL
This work shall be performed in accordance with the applicable portions of Section 208 and as detailed on the plans and as directed by the Engineer and as modified by this special provision. The proposed typical section provides a 22' roadway. As such, Article 208.01 provides for an additional 2' beyond EOP resulting in a total trench backfill length of 26' long as measured perpendicular to the centerline of roadway; however, at locations where pipe culverts are to be replaced near intersections with channelization, the trench backfill length will be wider. See pipe culvert replacement detail plans for the appropriate trench backfill limits.
This work shall be paid for at the contract unit price per Cubic Yard of TRENCH BACKFILL.
FILTER FABRIC
This work shall be performed in accordance with the applicable portions of Section 282 of the Standard Specification and as detailed on the plans and as directed by the Engineer and as modified by this special provision. The Contractor shall use fabric meeting the material requirements of Article 1080.03 to encase the trench as detailed in the plans to a depth of one (1) foot above the top of the pipe. As noted above in TRENCH BACKFILL, the length of the fabric lining the trench shall be a minimum of 36', as measured perpendicular to the centerline of the roadway.
This work shall be measured and paid for at the contract unit price per Square Yard of FILTER FABRIC.
AGGREGATE SUBGRADE IMPROVEMENT, 12"
This work shall be in accordance with the applicable portions of Section 311 of the Standard Specifications except that the coarse aggregate material called for in Article 1004.04 shall be substituted with a Breaker Run Crushed Stone material. This material shall only be used as directed by the Engineer to remedy unsuitable soils encountered during the trench excavation for pipe culverts and to ensure that the underlying material is suitable for constructing the pipe culvert bedding.

The Breaker Run Crushed Stone material shall meet the following requirements: except for the bedding material provided in either Article 502.13 or Article 540.06 for box culverts or Article 542.04(c) for pipe culverts, the Breaker Run Rock layer shall be constructed of top size 6 inch, with 70% to 90% by weight, passing through the 4 inch sieve and 15% to 40% by weight, passing through the 2 inch sieve. The Breaker Run Rock shall be reasonably uniformly graded from coarse to fine, and shall be taken from a quarry ledge capable of producing Class "D” quality aggregate. The granular bedding layer for the Pipe Culvert is included in the unit price for Pipe Culverts.
The Breaker Run Crushed Stone shall be paid for at the contract unit price per Square Yard of
AGGREGATE SUBGRADE IMPROVEMENT, 12".
EXCAVATING AND GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER
This work shall be performed according to the applicable portions of Section 202 of the standard specification. The Contractor shall closely coordinate the excavation and grading operation with the placement of the hot-mix asphalt base course widening operation. Prior to the placement of the HMA base course widening, the Contractor shall excavate, grade and shape the existing shoulder to the depth, slope and width shown in the plans. At the end of each working day, the Contractor will be required to have placed the HMA base course widening at all locations where the excavating and grading has been completed and been approved for paving by the Engineer. Vertical drop offs at the existing pavement edge will not be allowed over night.
Prior to the excavation of the existing shoulder, a full-depth saw cut shall be made at the appropriate offset for each existing driveway having a "hard" surface (asphalt or concrete). This is to ensure that spalling of the existing driveway pavement to remain in place does not occur.
Special attention to Section 202 of the standard specification, that excavated material shall be deposited in windrow along the shoulder or along the ditch fore-slope, later to be used to tuck back to completed HMA/ AGG shoulder as detail shown in Typical sections or as directed by the Engineer.
For the mainline, the Contractor shall use a string line, or another method approved by the Engineer, to establish a reference line to cut and create a relatively straight edge. The Contractor will work to ensure that the overall proposed width is being achieved as detailed in the Typical Section(s). All existing signs and mailboxes that conflict with the proposed improvement will be removed and reinstalled per Article
107.20 and 107.25. All costs associated with removing and reinstalling signs and mailboxes will not be paid for separately but shall be considered as included in the contract price per UNIT for EXCAVATING
AND GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER.
Saw cuts will not be paid for separately but shall be included in the contract price per UNIT for all the work previously described as EXCAVATING AND GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER.
Hot-mix asphalt base course widening will be paid for at the contract unit price per Square Yard for HOT-
MIX ASPHALT BASE COURSE WIDENING, 5''.
Method of Measurement: EXCAVATING AND GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER will be measured for payment in Unit ( i.e. 1 Unit= 100 FEET)
Basis of Payment: This work shall be paid for at the contract price per UNIT for EXCAVATING AND
GRADING EXISTING SHOULDER.

Density Verification Method Cores
Nuclear Density Gauge (Correlated when paving 3,000 tons per mixture)
Density verification test locations will be determined according to the document “Hot- Mix Asphalt QC/QA Procedure for Determining Random Density Locations”. The density testing interval for paving wider than or equal to 3 ft (1 m) will be 0.5 miles (800
m) for lift thicknesses of 3 in. (75 mm) or less and 0.2 miles (320 m) for lift thicknesses greater than 3 in. (75 mm). The density testing interval for paving less than 3 ft (1 m) wide will be 1 mile (1,600 m). If a day’s paving will be less than the prescribed density testing interval, the length of the day’s paving will be the interval for that day. The density testing interval for mixtures used for patching will be 50 patches with a minimum of one test per mixture per project.
If core testing is the density verification method, the Engineer will witness the Contractor coring, and secure and take possession of all density samples at the
LR1030 2
density verification locations. The Engineer will test the cores collected by the Contractor for density according to Illinois Modified AASHTO T 166 or AASHTO T 275.
If nuclear density gauge testing is the density verification method, the Engineer will conduct nuclear density gauge tests. The Engineer will follow the density testing procedure detailed in the document “Illinois Modified ASTM D 2950, Standard Test Method for Density of Bituminous Concrete In-Place by Nuclear Method”.
A density verification test will be the result of a single core or the average of the nuclear density tests at one location. The results of each density test must be within acceptable limits. The Engineer will promptly notify the Contractor of observed deficiencies.”
Revise the seventh paragraph and all subsequent paragraphs in Section D. of the document “Hot-Mix Asphalt QC/QA Initial Daily Plant and Random Samples” to read:
“Mixtures shall be sampled from the truck at the plant by the Contractor following the same procedure used to collect QC mixture samples (Section A). This process will be witnessed by the Engineer who will take custody of the verification sample. Each sample bag with a verification mixture sample will be secured by the Engineer using a locking ID tag. Sample boxes containing the verification mixture sample will be sealed/taped by the Engineer using a security ID label.”
