Paulsen Road (TR 114) Section 21-00532-00-BR

Project TQAC(305) McHenry County

Contract No 61M77

LOCATION OF PROJECT

The project is located along Paulsen Road at the North Branch Kishwaukee River in Hartland Township, northwest of Woodstock, northwest quadrant of McHenry County, Illinois. The bridge is located approximately 0.60 miles north of US Route 14. (Section 20, Township 45N, Range 6E). Gross length of 800 feet (0.152 miles) and a net length of 800 feet (0.152 miles)

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

The proposed improvement consists of the removal and reconstruction of the structure carrying Paulsen Road over the North Branch Kishwaukee River. The proposed structure will consist of a single span PCC beam bridge with 36” PPC IL beams and an 8” concrete deck and 2” minimum fillets. The total depth of the proposed superstructure will be 46”. The span of the bridge will be 83’ -11” center of abutment to center of abutment. The abutments will be integral and consist of 16” metal shell piles. The clear roadway of the structure will be 30’ with an out to out width of 34’. CalTrans ST-76 bridge railing will be utilized across the structure, which is a Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 4 approved roadside safety barrier. To accommodate the depth of the single span structure and meet the clearance and freeboard requirements, the profile of Paulsen Road will be raised. The approximate increase is 3.09’ at the maximum located near the south abutment. The proposed profile will consist of two sag curves and maintain a 0.5% longitudinal slope across the structure. Both vertical curves are located off of the structure. As a result of the profile adjustment, the adjacent roadway north and south of the structure is to be reconstructed. The horizontal alignment remains the same as existing with no horizontal curve. The proposed roadway will consist of two ten-foot lanes (one in each direction) and 5 foot shoulders. The 5 foot shoulders take into account the pedestrians and bicyclists due to the entrance and trail crossing for the adjacent Brookdale Conservation Area being located on Paulsen Road. The roadway and shoulders will be hot-mix asphalt. The proposed drainage is accommodated through roadside ditches or sheet flow. Existing drainage patterns are being maintained. There are three existing driveway / access culverts located within the project limits that are being replaced. Also included in the scope of work is the installation of guardrail, driveway modifications, roadside ditch grading, pavement markings, landscaping, and all incidental and collateral work necessary to complete the improvements as shown in the plans and described herein.

The above represents the best information available to the Department and is included for the convenience of the bidder. The days required for conflict resolution should be considered in the bid as this information has also been factored into the timeline identified for the project when setting the completion date. The applicable portions of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction shall apply.

Estimated duration of time provided above for the first conflicts identified will begin on the date of the executed contract regardless of the status of the utility relocations. The responsible agencies will be working toward resolving subsequent conflicts in conjunction with contractor activities in the number of days noted.

The estimated relocation duration must be part of the progress schedule submitted by the contractor. A utility kickoff meeting will be scheduled between the Department, the Department’s contractor, and the utility companies when necessary.

The contractor is responsible for contacting JULIE (or DIGGER within the City of Chicago) prior to any excavation work. Please note that IDOT electrical facilities are not part of the one-call locating services, such as JULIE or DIGGER.

If the contract requires the services of an electrical contractor, it is the contractor’s responsibility, at their own expense, to locate existing IDOT electrical facilities before commencing work. For contracts that do not require an electrical contractor, the contractor may request one free locate of IDOT electrical facilities by contacting the Department’s Electrical Maintenance Contractor.

Additional locate requests will be at the contractor’s expense.

The Department’s Electrical Maintenance Contractor must be notified at least 72 hours in advance of the work by calling 773-287-7600 or emailing dispatch@meade100.com to arrange for the locating of underground electrical facilities.

Please note, the marking of underground facilities does not absolve the contractor of their responsibility to repair or replace any facilities damaged during construction at their expense.
