WARNING
SERIOUS HAZARDS EXIST IN THE OPERATION OF MICROWAVE TUBES
HIGH VOLTAGE
Many microwave tubes/equipment operate at lethal voltages. Prevent contact with high voltages. Securely attach prominent hazard warnings. Always break the primary circuits of the power supply and discharge high voltage capacitors.
RADIO FREQUENCY RADIATION (NON-IONIZING)
Minimize exposure to RF radiation. Do not permit people in the vicinity of open energized waveguides or energized antennas. Exposure to high levels of RF radiation may cause severe injury. RF radiation may affect cardiac pacemakers.
Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) rules limit exposure to RF radiation. For normal environmental conditions and for incident electromagnetic energy of frequencies from 10 MHz to 100 GHz the radiation protection guide limit is 10 mW/cm2 (milliwatt per square centimeter) as averaged over a 0.1 hour period for occupational (controlled) exposure.
All input and output RF connections, waveguides, flanges, and gaskets must be RF leakproof. Never operate a microwave tube without a properly matched RF load. Never look into or expose any part of the body to an antenna or open waveguide. Monitor the tube and system for RF radiation leakage at regular intervals and after servicing.
IONIZING RADIATION (X-RAY)
Tubes operated above 15 kilovolts are capable of producing x-ray radiation.
Provide adequate x-ray shielding on all sides of these tubes as well as the modulator and pulse transformer tanks. Check x-ray levels. Never operate high voltage tubes without adequate x-ray shielding in place. Monitor the tube and system for x-ray radiation at regular intervals and after servicing.
IONIZING RADIATION (RADIOACTIVE)
The sealed component of a receiver protector tube may contain one or more of the following materials: Tritium (H3), Cobalt 60 (Co60) or Promethium 147 (Pm147). The activity level of the added material will not exceed the maximum levels (10 CFR 30.15(a)(8) for sale or distribution to persons exempt from the requirements for an NRC license. Communications & Power Industries Inc., Beverly Microwave Division marks each tube with the chemical symbol and activity of the added material.
Tubes are exempt devices under 10 CFR, Part 30.15 and normal handling does not present a radiation problem. When handling broken tubes wear protective rubber gloves and clothing. Avoid the possibility of rubbing radioactive material onto the skin. Wash exposed skin after handling broken tubes containing radioactive material. Avoid inhaling gases from broken tubes containing Tritium. Dispose of broken or spent tubes as specified in 10 CFR, Part 20.
CERTIFICATION OF ACCEPTABILITY FOR TRANSPORTATION
This package conforms to the conditions and limitations specified in 49 CFR
173.424 for radioactive material, excepted package - instruments or articles, and UN 2911.For air transport IATA 10.5.9.5 Instruments and manufactured articles applies.
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION
Gas discharge tubes can produce ultraviolet radiation. Painful skin burns can result from exposure to the ultraviolet radiation. Exposure of the unprotected eye to ultraviolet radiation can cause injury to the eye which can be permanent.
Maintain shielding intact. Avoid exposure to an ultraviolet source.
PRECAUTIONS IN STORAGE OF ELECTRON TUBES
Electron tubes should be stored in a clean dry environment suitable for electronic equipment. Tubes with permanent magnets (magnetrons, cross field amplifiers, traveling wave tubes and klystrons for example) may generate stray magnetic fields. These and similar devices should be stored so that such fields will not interfere with other equipment.
BERYLLIUM AND BERYLLIUM OXIDE
Some Communications & Power Industries, Inc., Beverly Microwave Division microwave tubes contain beryllium or beryllium oxide (beryllia) parts. While the solid beryllium represents no particular hazard, operations which may produce dust or fumes represent an extreme hazard. Do not alter or disassemble tube containing beryllium parts. Do not grind, grit blast or acid clean beryllium. If a tube window breaks, carefully remove the tube from the mating waveguide and close the tube flanges with tape.
Disposal of tubes containing beryllium must be done in a safe manner and in accordance with federal, state and local laws and regulations. Safeguard people in the disposal operation. Warn people in any possible salvage operation.
Communications & Power Industries Inc., Beverly Microwave Division, marks tubes which contain beryllium with a warning label. Because the label may be destroyed or missing, contact Communications & Power Industries Inc., Beverly Microwave Division before alteration, disassembly or destruction of a Communications & Power Industries Inc., Beverly Microwave Division microwave tube.
CORROSIVE AND POISONOUS COMPOUNDS
Some systems may use a dielectric gas in the output waveguide or cathode high voltage bushing. If breakdown does occur, the gas may decompose and form highly toxic and corrosive compounds. For example, Freon gas which may form phosgene; sulfur hexaflouride (SF6) gas may form sulfur or fluorine compounds.
When breakdown does occur in the presence of these gases, take proper precautions. Avoid inhaling gases from these systems. Avoid touching liquids from these systems.
IMPLOSION HAZARD
A glass tube may implode (shatter) if the tube suffers mechanical shock. The output window may implode (shatter) if the tube suffers mechanical shock. Flying debris may result in injury. Avoid inhaling gas or dust from broken tubes.
HOT LIQUIDS
High temperatures arise in microwave tubes/equipment during operation. Liquid cooling channels may reach high temperature under pressure. A rupture of the cooling channel or contact with hot portions of the tube /equipment could scald or burn.
Liquid cooling may leave surfaces hot. These areas can become very hot even though other parts of the tube/equipment are cool.
HOT SURFACES
The air-cooled surface of a microwave tube/equipment may operate at a high temperature. Integral motors can also operate at high temperatures. Hot surfaces may remain hot after the end of operation. Avoid touching these surfaces during and after operation. Maintain airflow until hot surfaces have cooled.
CADMIUM
CPI uses cadmium only when specified by our customers or when required for corrosion resistance. Under normal handling and use cadmium as used on these devices does not pose a health risk. CPI marks devices containing cadmium with the chemical symbol for cadmium, Cd. Operations with the potential to generate cadmium dust or fumes can pose serious health risks and should be avoided. If for any reason operations with the potential to generate dust or fumes must be performed, consult 29CFR Part 1910, Standard 1027 to insure compliance with OSHA requirements before the operation is undertaken.
WEIGHT
Some Electron tubes may weigh over 40 pounds. If equipped with handles, utilize proper lifting techniques and assistance from another individual to help prevent accidents and injuries.
MAGNETS
Magnets that are part of the electron tube can generate strong Magnetic fields.
Their proximity to certain electronic devices (i.e.: aircraft navigation equipment) can interfere with their operation. Care should be taken for storage and installation of the electron tube.
ROTATING MACHINERY
Unprotected rotating parts such as cooling fans and actuating devices could pose a hazard if clothing or parts of the human body make contact. Individuals should be aware that these devices may activate with no warning and care should be observed in their vicinity.
