About this file
This is an addendum to an Invitation for Bid (IFB 168027) issued by the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University for an electric dewax kiln for the Cohen National Casting Center Foundry. Addendum #1, issued July 28, 2026, provides clarifications to three key technical questions submitted by prospective bidders. The document confirms that the kiln's wax elimination capability refers to collected wax rather than burned wax, indicates that an afterburner is available as an optional feature with the supplier's recommendation requested, and details the typical ceramic shell mold processing procedure. The process involves two primary steps: initial loading of ceramic shell molds with a ramp to 300 degrees Fahrenheit held for one hour to melt wax below its flash fire point, followed by cooling and unloading; and subsequent loading of dewaxed molds with a ramp to 800 degrees Fahrenheit over two hours with a one-hour hold. Bids are due August 21, 2026, at 3 p.m. EDT, with official responses to all written questions scheduled for August 11, 2026, and anticipated award notification on September 1, 2026.
The kiln must meet mandatory specifications including interior dimensions between 23 by 29 by 39 inches minimum and 42 by 42 by 42 inches maximum, capability to eliminate a minimum of 17 liters (32 pounds) of wax, operation within 200 amps at 208-volt 3-phase existing electrical capacity, temperature range from room temperature to 1562 degrees Fahrenheit, and inclusion of a capture hood. Pricing must be quoted on a Free on Board Destination basis with freight prepaid and include installation, onsite training for up to four people, and a minimum one-year warranty; SUNY's tax-exempt status means prices should exclude sales tax. No prior identical or substantially similar contracts have been awarded within the past five years. Award will be made to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, and all submissions must be posted through the Bidnet Direct platform.

IFB 168027 - ADDENDUM #1 July 28, 2026
Question 1: Regarding the requirement “must be capable of eliminating a minimum of 17 liters (32#) of wax”, is that wax being collected or burned away?
Answer: It is collected.
Question 2: Regarding the requirement “Capture Hood must be included”, do you require an afterburner?
Answer: We would be interested in it as an option. We would also be interested to hear if it is recommended.
Question 3: Regarding the requirement “Must be capable of temperature ranging from room temperature up to 1562°F/850°C”, what is the typical process? Please include temperatures, ramps, holds, and when molds are being placed and removed from the kiln.
Answer: The typical process is below but we will take recommendations on usage from the kiln supplier:
- Step 1: Ceramic shell molds are loaded, ramp to 300°F, hold for one hour (depending on size of mold) to melt wax out below the wax’s flash fire point then ramp down to room temp, unload molds, remove wax from tray.
- Step 2: The already dewaxed ceramic shell molds are loaded, ramp up to 800°F typically over two hours and held for one hour.
